What is Flags Officers 4 America? 124 veterans pen letter questioning Joe Biden's election win, mental health
"Our nation is in deep peril. We are in a fight for our survival as a Constitutional Republic". These are the opening words of a letter signed by the group 'Flag Officers 4 America'. Signed by over 124 retired veterans, the public letter denounces the 2020 presidential election result, while questioning President Joe Biden's mental health condition.
The group shot to fame after its letter from January 4, 2021, was made public on May 12 as another shot in the arm to former president Donald Trump's big claims that there was election fraud and that the election was stolen from him. The letter rehashes several GOP talking points, such as the legality of votes and the swift passage of laws as Executive Orders by Biden. The letter also calls the Biden administration, "a hard left turn toward Socialism and a Marxist form of tyrannical government". With the ouster of Liz Cheney from Republican leadership, the letter cements the conservative commitment toward Trump's 'big lie'. But more than the contents of the letter, what matters is what exactly is the group? Who runs it and what are their goals? Those are the questions we aim to answer.

The group defines itself as "retired US Generals and Admirals defending the Constitution" on its website. It adds that "although retired from active service, each of us feels bound by that oath to do what we can, in our capacity today, to protect our nation from the threats to her freedom." The website also lists several 'key issues' the group focuses on, such as China, big tech, the border crisis and Iran.
It's unclear who founded the website and how it is funded. There are no social media accounts nor any details about the group on the website.MEAWW has reached out to them for their response and will update the article, once we receive it.
All we know is that the group is comprised of a large number of veterans, around 124 of whom have signed their names on the letter. Signees include officers from all the branches of the armed forces, including the Marine Corps and Coast Guard. The letter is at odds with a common consensus on Biden's leadership and the election. In a historic first, 10 former secretaries of defense penned an extraordinary op-ed in the Washington Post calling for a peaceful transition of power. Published on January 4, the letter came just days prior to the January 6 insurrection as many Trump supporters called on the military to intervene.
'Survival of nation at stake'
The chilling letter echoes several GOP talking points, right down to the hyperbole and dramatization of current events often used by Trump. "The FBI and Supreme Court must act swiftly when election irregularities are surfaced and not ignore them as was done in 2020. Finally, H.R.1 & S.1, (if passed), would destroy election fairness and allow Democrats to forever remain in power violating our Constitution and ending our Representative Republic," the letter claims. It also adds, "We must support and hold accountable politicians who will act to counter Socialism, Marxism and Progressivism, support our Constitutional Republic, and insist on fiscally responsible governing while focusing on all Americans, especially the middle class, not special interest or extremist groups which are used to divide us into warring factions."
It also takes a dig at Biden's mental health, saying, "The mental and physical condition of the Commander in Chief cannot be ignored. Recent Democrat leadership’s inquiries about nuclear code procedures sends a dangerous national security signal to nuclear armed adversaries, raising the question about who is in charge." Claiming that the "survival of our Nation and its cherished freedoms, liberty, and historic values are at stake," the letter ends by calling for citizens to "elect political representatives who will act to Save America, our Constitutional Republic". There's a lot of misleading and faulty claims in the letter, which was quickly slammed on social media.

Another user claimed, "That over the top letter signed by all those retired generals and admirals -including two former bosses of mine - was shocking and disappointing. But not at all surprising."

Another person commented, "Next time a political candidate mentions the number of retired generals supporting them, it is worthwhile remembering this embarrassingly stupid letter signed by over 120."

It's unclear what the group hoped to achieve with the letter, but they've clearly got the attention they wanted. There's no word yet on if the Pentagon will respond to the letter or act against those who signed it.
