On the latest episode of HGTV’s 'Fixer to Fabulous' parents of renovator Jenny Marrs and Dave Marrs’s in-laws, recruit them to pull off a surprise renovation for them. The pressure was on as the Marrs raced against the clock to create a quaint, warm and welcoming home. Here are a few tips to take away if you are close to retirement and want to prep your house for a more relaxed and fun lifestyle. Or, if you want to surprise your old parents by upgrading their home for a more laid-back yet efficient lifestyle, read on.

If you think the Gen X would prefer a cozy home with vintage wallpapers, you are wrong my friend. Jenny’s father specifically asked for a modern setup with hardwood floors. Her parents wanted to keep it classy and luxurious. Jenny and Dave felt the pressure pretty soon! But here’s what they came up with:

Instead of plain boring walls, they covered the outside of the house with Cedar wood and finished it with some brick stairs leading to the inside of the house. The clash of the brick and the wood gave the house a rough and masculine look. The couple also gave their parents a giant black entrance door with an arched top. We all want to live that ‘The Great Gatsby’ dream someday, don’t we!

Jenny’s parents love wine, Dave took it upon himself to build them a huge floor to ceiling wine-cellar that could hold enough wine for a lifetime. Honestly, what better way to spend your retirement days sitting on your porch, sipping on wine. Jenny and all her siblings bought several bottles of wine to fill up the cellar and attached a special chits to each bottle. One chit said, “Sorry Jenny messed it up, we know you wanted only Dave to renovate the house.”

To keep up with the black fireplace theme Jenny decided to paint the fireplace into black as well while the walls in the inside of the house were white. They also put massive black hanging pendant lights on top of the kitchen island.

The color-scheme in the study was green and white with a special music nook beside the window. The study also had a pull out bed concealed as a cupboard. Jenny’s parents have a total of ten grandchildren, six grandsons and four granddaughters. Jenny decided to put six blue androgynous plants and four pink ones, one for each kid.
