Fans divided in outrage over Brazilian show's gay Jesus portrayal as #cancelonetflix trends on social media

While some have bluntly called out the extreme right of Brazil for being ridiculous, a few have extended their support for the petition driven by their religious sentiments.

Netflix’s comedy ‘The First Temptation of Christ’, as the name suggests, has come under fire for representing Jesus as a homosexual entity. The debate over Jesus’ presumed sexuality has not only given rise to the trend #cancelonetflix, but also promoted heated argument between the conservatives and liberals, who are using Twitter as a platform to present their opinion about the latest controversy.

The Brazilian YouTube group Porta dos Fundo and the creators of ‘First Temptation of Christ’ have defended their leg on the ground terming it “artistic freedom and humour through satire”, Brazilian president Jai Boldonaro’s son Eduardo Bolsonaro called the film “garbage” on Twitter and claimed that the filmmaker “do not represent Brazilian society.

Meanwhile, Twitter is swamped with opinions pouring in from across the globe, in all forms of posts. While some have bluntly called out extreme right of Brazil for being ridiculous, a few have extended their support for the petition driven by their religious sentiments.

One of the users posted, “If something is offensive and blasphemous (to Christians and Muslims alike) then surely that overrides all perceived "freedom of speech". If your speech causes harm, then it should be banned just as inciting hatred, racism and inflammatory speech is illegal.”

Adding to that another tweet stated, “Would @Netflix make movies parodying the founders of other religions? Of course not - and that’s the issue Only Christianity is allowed to be ridiculed
#CanceloNetflix”

However, the majority of them have spoken against the moment stating examples from shows based on similar themes or have portrayed religious figures in a different light.

“Let me get this straight...nobody was bothered by the fact that Netflix just streamed a show called MESSIAH in which a Muslim Arab played a false prophet...but a show with a gay Jesus and now it's #cancelonetflix ????”, one of the fans lamented.

And another, pointing at the much-prevalent Catholic church sexual abuse issue, wrote “Catholics on pedophilia in the Church: #NotAllPriests.Catholics on the Netflix show with a gay Jesus: #cancelonetflix”

Meanwhile, some of the Netflix fans were only concerned about losing out on a good chunk of entertainment if the show got canceled, regardless of what or who it represents.

“I'm not canceling nor watching crap movies, but what is terrible is the lengths media is willing to go to be "woke", and the massive attack we suffer from the far left #cancelonetflix,” a fan expressed through a tweet.
