Spoilers for ‘Firefly Lane’ Season 2 Episode 12

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: ‘Firefly Lane’ Season 2 Episode 12 is what one would call a filler episode. You know, the kind every season has, where nothing too groundbreaking happens but it’s still an easy watch? Well, Episode 12 of ‘Firefly Lane’ Season 2 served this purpose to its fullest potential. Frankly, with a series as emotional as ‘Firefly Lane’ episodes like these are more like breathers.

Despite being a much-needed filler or breather, whatever one would like to call it, there is something that particularly stood out in this episode, and it puts a little question mark on how fans view Kate Mularkey, played by Sarah Chalke. There’s often been a discourse about her character more than the others in 'Firefly Lane', and this episode has added some fuel to the fire.

What is ‘Firefly Lane’ Season 2 Part 2 about? Plot of Netflix drama series explained

Is Kate really a goody two shoes?

It’s time to retire the notion that absolutely anyone in ‘Firefly Lane’ is a perfect character. Over the span of three decades, we have been introduced to countless characters, each more flawed than the previous ones. The two lead women, Kate Mularkey and Tully Hart, should ideally get the award for the most flawed characters ever written, and maybe that’s not the worst thing ever. The raw and honest portrayal of women in television is what enhances the viewing experience.

Everyone can see a little bit of themselves in Tully or Kate. Between the duo, Tully has often been portrayed as the edgier character who makes mistakes, and Kate has been portrayed as the goody two shoes who can never do wrong. Albeit, ‘Firefly Lane’ Season 2 Episode 12 will challenge this portrayal and make you believe otherwise. At present time, Kate, Tully and Johnny Ryan attend a party at KPOC and are hit by a wave of nostalgia.

This party brings up a lot of old memories and one in particular stands out to the group. Back in the day, when Kate was engaged to her lovely British boyfriend Theo, and yes, she clearly has a thing for men with accents, Johnny and she shared a kiss in the office. Now, this entire episode is a debate between Kate and Johnny about who made the first move, because Kate has convinced herself that she would have never done that to Theo and that Johnny made the first move.

Well, it came as no shocker when it was revealed that Kate did indeed make the first move, however, this was only revealed to the viewers. Even as ‘Firefly Lane’ Season 2 Episode 12 concludes, Johnny finally caves, letting Kate believe that he made the first move.

A breath of fresh air

Even though Kate isn’t able to recall her first move, ‘Firefly Lane’ Season 2 Episode 12 has done a good job of taking Kate slightly off the high horse, which was needed. It was time Tully was portrayed as the most flawed character, and some light was thrown on Kate’s shortcomings as well. Whether you’re a Kate or Tully, this episode will make you laugh, and smile and then the feeling will slowly sink in, because after all the laughter, come the tears.

You can stream all episodes of ‘Firefly Lane’ Season 2 on Netflix from April 27, 2023.
