PALM BEACH, FLORIDA: Former president Donald Trump has claimed that the FBI recently raided his Mar-a-Lago home, reportedly as part of an investigation into whether he took classified documents with him when he left the White House. He was seen leaving Trump Tower in New York on Monday, August 8, 2022, giving a thumbs up to those who were gathered. In his announcement about the FBI raid, Trump did not specifically mention what the agents were looking for, but said that his home was "under siege, raided, and occupied by a large group of FBI agents." "They even broke into my safe!" Trump said.

The investigation focuses on material that Trump brought with him to Mar-a-Lago after leaving the White House, the New York Times reported. The FBI was specifically trying to find out if he has classified information in his private possession, which would be a violation of federal law. Trump reportedly took 15 boxes of material with him in January 2021 after leaving Washington, DC, but the boxes were returned to the National Archives in January 2022. The FBI still tried to find out if the former president had additional presidential records or any classified documents at his South Florida estate.

CNN reported that Trump's personal attorney Christina Bobb was present during the search. Eric Trump, seen at the Trump Tower on Monday, recalled getting a call on the raid and informing his father about it. "I was the guy who got the call this morning and I called my father and let him know it happened, and I was involved all day," he told Fox News host Sean Hannity. "Welcome to politics in the 2020s."

"To have 30 FBI agents -- actually more than that -- descend on Mar-a-Lago, give absolutely, you know, no notice, go through the gates, start ransacking an office, ransacking a closet -- you know, they broke into a safe. He didn't even have anything in the safe. I mean, give me a break," he added, charging President Joe Biden's White House for allegedly being the force behind the raid.

"This didn't come from a local FBI field office in Palm Beach, Florida. You know this came from? This came from one place and one building, and that is the White House in Washington, DC. They want to attack a guy who they view as his greatest threat, Biden's greatest threat," Eric said.

Trump is reportedly considering another bid for the presidency. "These are dark times for our Nation, as my beautiful home, Mar-A-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida, is currently under siege, raided, and occupied by a large group of FBI agents. Nothing like this has ever happened to a President of the United States before," Trump said in a statement. "After working and cooperating with the relevant Government agencies, this unannounced raid on my home was not necessary or appropriate."

Trump said, "Such an assault could only take place in broken, Third-World Countries. Sadly, America has now become one of those Countries, corrupt at a level not seen before."

"They even broke into my safe! What is the difference between this and Watergate, where operatives broke into the Democrat National Committee? Here, in reverse, Democrats broke into the home of the 45th President of the United States," he added. Trump was not at Mar-a-Lago when the raid took place.

The FBI reportedly gave US Secret Service agents at Mar-a-Lago advance notice, and they let them into the property. The Secret Service agents did not participate in the search, indicating that the FBI did not have to break into the property or bust down doors, the Daily Mail reported.

'Unprecedented political weaponization'

A number of people have taken to social media to condemn the raid. "The FBI raid on President Trump’s home is an unprecedented political weaponization of the Justice Department. They’ve been after President Trump as a candidate, as President, and now as a former President. Using the criminal justice system in this manner is un-American," South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem wrote on Twitter.

"The GOP must set up a Select Committee to investigate the FBI’s politically-motivated raid on Mar-a-Lago and on ALL the fraudulent persecution of President Trump from our government. This cannot wait. We are turning into a banana republic at record speed," Lauren Boebert tweeted.

Actor and comedian Terrence K Williams said, "Every Republican better fight for Trump and do something about this unlawful FBI raid or get the hell out of office".

Another said, "The FBI hasn’t raided the corrupt Bidens, or the Clintons; it hasn’t punished the “Russia hoax” collaborators; we’re watching an absurd show trial that violates the Constitution and the law; and we’re weeks from a midterm election. The raid on Trump is ridiculous and inflammatory."

One user said, "This FBI raid on Donald Trump’s Florida home is terrible for America - and it will backfire on the Dems."
