Facebook employee dies after jumping off building at company's Menlo Park headquarters, police rule out foul play
SILICON VALLEY, CALIFORNIA: An employee of social media giant Facebook has reportedly died in an apparent suicide at the company's headquarters campus in Silicon Valley.
Dispatch received a call at about 11.30 am on Thursday, September 19, after horrified bystanders at Menlo Park, California, witnessed an adult male jump from the terrace of a four-story building on the 100 block of Jefferson Drive, according to a CNBC report.
Responding paramedics rendered first aid to the victim but he was declared dead on the scene despite their best efforts to revive him.
Facebook has since confirmed, in a statement, that the deceased individual was an employee, but has not publicly identified him pending family notification. "We were saddened to learn that one of our employees passed away at our Menlo Park headquarters earlier today," the statement said.
"We're cooperating with the police in their investigation and providing support to employees. While the family is being notified, we have no information to share," the statement continued.
"We hope to provide an update when we learn additional information from law enforcement," the statement added. The initial investigation indicated that there was no foul play in the tragic death, according to the police.
“Menlo Park Police Officers and Menlo Park Fire Protection District personnel responded, and when they arrived, found the victim unresponsive,” Menlo Park Police Department said on Thursday. "Firefighters and paramedics administered medical aid but were unable to revive the victim."
Meanwhile, the official cause and manner of death are yet to be determined by the San Mateo County Coroner's Office. The social media giant reportedly has 39,651 full-time employees around the world, and their Menlo Park headquarters houses several thousand workers.
