'Extreme Makeover: Home Edition': Fans cry as the Holtzclaw family celebrate their wheelchair-accessible home
The Holtzclaw family is nothing short of an inspiration, especially Jeff whose disability hasn't stopped him from teaching students and being there for people when they need help.
However, there's no shying away from the fact that the accident has changed his life and it hasn't been great for him so far in terms of family life.
The doorways in the house aren't ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) compliant, which means it is really narrow for Jeff and his wheelchair to go through them without chipping bits off the frames of the doors.
Also, the layout isn't wheelchair-friendly. The rooms aren't connected with sloping ramps and that has caused Jeff to stay away from certain areas of the house.
It had many steps and multiple thresholds that made Jeff's movement difficult. However, the design team noticed this and made sure that accessibility was their number one priority. When Jeff saw the ramp for the first time, he cried and was extremely emotional and so was his family.
The kitchen was new and improved, stacked with technologically-advanced appliances and even a vacuum cleaner that's remote-controlled. The pair is left in awe of what had become of their space.
Meanwhile, fans could not stop crying and seem extremely touched by what the design team, builders and volunteers created for the family.
