NEW YORK, NEW YORK CITY: When it comes to selecting a comfortable yet stylish airport attire, leggings, and yoga pants become the undisputed choice for many female flyers. But according to an aviation expert, they are one of the most dangerous things a passenger could wear in the event of an emergency on board.

Aviation journalist Christine Negroni, who authored a book on the world’s most mysterious air disasters ‘The Crash Detectives’, recently revealed the harrowing reason why one should never wear leggings on a plane as she also warned against removing shoes whilst flying. "You might have to escape through a cabin fire or there could be a separate fire on the ground once you leave the aircraft," the expert told The Sun.

Negroni added that artificial fibers should not be worn by travelers since they are more prone to burn and cling to human flesh. "Everyone is wearing yoga pants on planes now, but I avoid all artificial fibers because they are more likely to burn and stick to you if there is a fire," the journalist continued. "I'd advise wearing cotton clothes or anything made of natural fibers." However, this isn't the only thing she says to avoid doing on a flight during a crash.

Both airports and airlines in Germany have recently encountered difficulties due to to staff shortages resulting from Covid-era layoffs, though today's passenger processing at Berlin Brandenburg Airport appeared to be running smoothly.

Negroni also exhorted passengers to refrain from taking off their shoes while in the air. "One of the best things people can do is put their shoes on for take-off and landing. This is still not required by many airlines and I think it ought to be.” She noted further, "If you escape an aircraft, the floor could be very hot or cold, it might be covered in oil or on fire, or in a cornfield – you won’t want to be barefoot.”

‘Pick sneakers over high heels’

The flight expert also advised choosing fitted clothing over baggy clothes. "Mainly err on the side of caution. Pick sneakers over high heels, pick natural fibers over synthetic, and take tight-fitting clothes over loose-fitting," she added. The outlet also reported that because of this reason, flip-flops are also inappropriate footwear; instead, flyers choose robust trainers. It also helps to be extra prepared during key moments on a plane journey. A study has shown that most fatal plane crashes take place during take-off and landing, meaning passengers were not the most prepared during these moments.

Conversely, if you want a more pleasant flight in First Class, it's best to avoid jeans or trainers. One flight attendant told, "Smart but understated. You should look like you travel often...it helps. Someone who is potentially due to get an upgrade can be knocked back if they aren't dressed suitably." Another flight attendant added, "No jeans or trainers — so I always go for tight black trousers and a blazer or a dress. For men, chinos or trousers and a shirt are worn," as per Who What Wear.
