EXCLUSIVE | 'The Whale' fatsuit team hail Brendan Fraser's 'patience' after Oscar 2023 win
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: The winners of the 95th Academy Awards were announced on Sunday night at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood. Makeup and Hairstyling was one of the toughest categories during the star-studded event and no one had the slightest idea which movie will take home the coveted trophy. However, it was Darren Aronofsky’s ‘The Whale’ that won the prestigious accolade and stunned everyone.
It was a grueling physical transformation for Brendan Fraser and he had to spend a chunk of his days in his makeup room. Adrien Morot, Judy Chin, and Annemarie Bradley accepted the award and opened up about how difficult the entire process was. In an EXCLUSIVE conversation with MEAWW after winning the accolade, the trio noted Fraser behaved like a “champion” when the makeup and prosthetics were being applied on him in the makeup room.

When asked how Fraser reacted to the grueling session before filming his scenes, Chin noted that that the actor was “willing to do everything for the role” and always remained patient.
“He was a champ. The makeup took about four hours, right?” Adrien created a cooling suit for him, thank goodness, that kept him cool under the prosthetics and he was so patient and willing to do anything for the role and to create that look,” Chin told MEAWW exclusively.
Meanwhile, Morot said that it took “seven hours” to complete that look.
The movie edged past feature films such as ‘All Quiet on The Western Front’, ‘The Batman’, ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’, and ‘Elvis’ to win the award. There was a close competition between ‘Elvis’ and ‘The Whale’, but Aronofsky’s drama movie triumphed at the 95th Academy Awards.
As per different reports, both the actor and the makeup artist endured eight hours a day for Fraser’s transformation. It took four hours to apply the prosthetics and an additional four hours to remove all the prosthetics. All the hard work has paid off with this trophy.
‘The Whale’ sees Fraser playing a 300-pound man named Charlie who lives in isolation and wants to reconnect with his estranged daughter Ellie (Sadie Sink). Charlie has gained a lot of weight after the tragic death of his partner. His partner's sudden demise shattered him and he started to suffer from an eating disorder.
Fraser won the Best Actor (Male) accolade for his role in ‘The Whale’ and made it 2 for the movie. The actor thanked his co-stars and his family during the acceptance speech and got really emotional while accepting the award. He said, “I’m grateful to Darren Aronofsky for throwing me a creative lifeline and hauling me aboard the good ship ‘The Whale'. That was written by Samuel D. Hunter who is our lighthouse. Gentleman, you laid your whale-sized hearts bare so that we could see into your souls as no one else could do.”
‘The Whale’ is currently available on VOD.
