Jimmy Kimmel, who is known for his slapstick humor, is hosting the 72nd edition of the Primetime Emmy Awards. The American television host kicked-off Emmys 2020 with a monologue that poked fun at the pandemic, Jerry Falwell’s sex scandal and ABC’s woefully old school censorship. This is the first time in the history of the Emmys that the awards will be presented virtually with only a handful of artists at the venue i.e. Staples Center in Los Angeles. The 52-year-old gave his epic monologue speech to cardboard cut outs. He started off his speech with, “Welcome to the Pand-Emmys! Wow, it’s great to finally see people again.”

Continuing his speech while covering a variety of hot topics of 2020 including the popular TV show ‘Schitt’s Creek’, he said, “HBO can show us a big blue p***s, no problem. I can’t say Schitt’s with a ‘c’!”  Kimmel then poked fun at President Trump’s fondness for packed rallies. He revealed that he was talking to a an empty stadium. “Just like prom night. Of course, I’m here all alone; of course, we don’t have an audience. Of course there’s no one here! This isn’t a MAGA rally. It’s the Emmys!”

Kimmel also shared the monologue on his official Twitter account and posted, “We put the “mono” in monologue at the 2020 #Emmys... @TelevisionAcad @ABCNetwork @BatemanJason”. It did not take much time for the monologue to go viral. The social media users went berserk after watching the speech and the section who enjoyed his humor took to Twitter to praise him. One user said, “I could not imagine how this was going to work, but you are killing it under very difficult circumstances!” One Twitterati said, “I like the monologue of Jimmy kimmel he is so hilarious.. Good editing for the fake audiences #Emmy”

One user stated, “I enjoyed the #Emmy monologue from @jimmykimmel...Kimmel’s #COVID snipes n’ swipes put a spotlight on the asinine nature of 2020; any previous affection for American hysteria is waning. His passive-aggressive remarks about the “pa-a-andemic” were refreshing, and funny.”

However, many compared Kimmel’s Emmys monologue to Ricky Gervais's Oscar monologue and slammed him saying, “Ricky Gervais you'll NEVER be. Jimmy Kimmel kicks off 2020 Emmys with jabs at coronavirus, Trump supporters during opening monologue.”

One said, “Hey @rickygervais  please save us. These #Emmy Awards are horrendous. The humour is for primary school level (even that is being generous). Ask the host, Jimmy Kimmel why he is talking to his audience like we are a bunch of 3 year olds.” Another tweeted: "It's too bad that Ricky Gervais isn't hosting the Emmy's so that right-wingers won't get to gush about how an incredibly rich celebrity expressed his opinion that a bunch of incredibly rich celebrities shouldn't express their opinions." More wished Gervais was hosting as they tweeted: "Remember when award shows were mildly interesting and actually rewarded talent and not just an opportunity for virtue signalling to a diminishing audience of sycophants? If only Ricky Gervais was hosting. #Emmys."
