'Emergence' Episode 12 'Killshot Pt. 1' wins big with romance, betrayal and loads of mind-boggling science

With only one episode left for 'Emergence' to conclude, the creators of the ABC series are leaving no stone unturned in creating an ending that could leave us perplexed. And, the latest episode ‘Killshot Pt.1’ serves as proof for the same, which besides its usual cop and thief drama, surprised us with a blooming romance, potential threats to mankind and of course, some of the most wicked moments we've witnessed on 'Emergence' so far!
‘Killshot Pt. 1’ opens with Helen (Rowena King) and Emily Cox (Maria Dizzia) conversing over breakfast, just the sight of which brings chills down one's spine. The head of the Splinter offers Emily everything her organization has acquired over the course of their work if she helps her replicate and expand Piper's powers.
Meanwhile, Jo Evans (Allison Tolman) goes to visit Agent Brooks (Enver Gjokaj), who ended up in the hospital as John Doe, following his encounter with Helen the previous night. Well-aware of the trouble he has gotten into, Jo helps him escape from the hospital before the FBI agents find him, amid which, they finally share a kiss.
When Jo learns that Brooks was being followed, she uses him as a bait to capture Helen. Their plan unfolds successfully, but the end result turns out to be different than what they expected when Helen’s creator Lorreta appears before them, who bears an uncanny resemblance to the head of the Splinter.
Although Jo isn’t convinced at first when Lorreta reveals to her the details of the inception of the AIs which occurred 18 years ago, the police chief agrees to trade Piper’s source code for the only weapon that could perish Helen; a needle comprising a type of protein enzyme, fatal to the AIs.
Jo’s efforts in tracking Helen are eased by Chris' phone, which comes online suddenly. The GPS traces the phone to an Island, which once served as a USDA facility. Jo and Brooks are next seen heading to the Island, with very little time in their hands to stop Helen, before she succeeds in enabling the ultimate power source stolen from the defense unit, which is capable of erasing codes of all the AIs.
‘Killshot Pt. 1’, despite helping us achieve clarity on several factors that puzzled our minds throughout the series, ends by giving rise to many more questions. With the series’ finale only a week away, we can’t help but wonder about our favorite characters whose fate is up in the air.
With Helen’s true powers being unveiled and Piper’s determination to save Jo, Benny, and her fellow AIs, we couldn’t wait to know what the final episode has in store for us!
The finale episode of 'Emergence', 'Killshot Pt. 2' airs on January 28 on ABC.
