Ellen DeGeneres scandal: Sofia Vergara fans slam ‘mean host’ for mocking her English accent as videos resurface

A string of old videos from Sofia Vergara's appearances on Ellen's show resurfaced and many fans couldn't help but express their disgust

The Ellen DeGeneres controversy doesn't seem to die down anytime soon. As rumors and reports surfaced that the TV host has a very negative off-camera attitude with her staff and audience which even labeled her as a "mean host", an internal investigation was carried out. As per several reports, the staff and crew of 'The Ellen DeGeneres Show' were said to be "delighted" that the "toxic" atmosphere behind the scenes was finally exposed. 

Soon after, Ellen even went on to issue a public apology, saying: “On day one of our show, I told everyone in our first meeting that ‘The Ellen DeGeneres Show’ would be a place of happiness — no one would ever raise their voice, and everyone would be treated with respect. Obviously, something changed, and I am disappointed to learn that this has not been the case,” she wrote, adding, “That will now change and I’m committed to ensuring this does not happen again.”

However, fans are still irked with her behavior and can't stop calling her out for the entire controversy. Recently, a few clips from the show resurfaced where Ellen can be seen mocking Sofia Vergara's accent and her English pronunciation. A Colombian-American actress, Vergara has Spanish roots and is among one of the highest-paid TV actresses after her stint in shows like 'Modern Family' and 'Meet the Browns'.

A string of old videos from her appearances resurfaced on Twitter and many fans couldn't help but express their disappointment and disgust. It started with a compilation video of Ellen and Sofia's moments together. Once shared on the micro-blogging site, it went viral with over 42,000 retweets and 196,000 likes.

Soon after, many more reactions started pouring on social media. "I stopped watching Ellen years ago and the final straw was when she was making fun of Sofia Vergara’s accent and questioned her intelligence when Sofia literally went to medical school before becoming a model/actress," one tweet read.

"Ugh those clips of ellen making fun of Sofia Vergara made me feel self-conscious of my English all over again. I've been questioning various tweets and ended up tweeting nothing cause IDK if it's right," another Twitter user said.

One Vergara fan called for canceling the show. "It‘s the making fun of bilingual queen Sofia Vergara while being a monolingual American for me. Cancel that show, I‘m so tired of ellen and her extreme ignorance," the tweet read.

One wondered what would Vergara say about Ellen: "I wanna listen to what Sofia Vergara has to say about Ellen. She is always made fun of on the show for her accent, “Fun” in a mean way. It was always the accent (English is not her first language duh)."

Another viewer wrote: "Thinking about how Ellen DeGeneres made up a whole segment on her show just to "teach an English word of the day" to Sofia Vergara. And how she'd constantly make fun of her accent and "how worse it had gotten" over the years on national television."

Praising Vergara's way to handle things, one user shared an old clip and said, "How can you be so disrespectful? Ellen really makes me. Sofia is so calm though bless her."
