'Election interference at its finest': Donald Trump supporters slam Fani Willis as she seeks August start date for ex-POTUS' Georgia trial
ATLANTA, GEORGIA: Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis proposed a start date of August 5, 2024, for the trial of former President Donald Trump and his co-defendants in the Georgia election interference case in a court filing on November 17.
The DA claimed in the filing that the August date "balances potential delays from Defendant Trump's other criminal trials" while ensuring the other defendants their constitutional right to a speedy trial.
Willis had originally sought to have the 19 defendants on trial together in October. However, the case was severed by Fulton County Judge Scott McAfee, who called the move "a procedural and logistical inevitability."
The possibility of Donald Trump being under trial during the 2024 presidential election
According to ABC News, District Attorney Fani Willis had mentioned in an interview that she expected the trial to last "many months," effectively meaning that if it began in August, the procedure could still be underway at the time of the 2024 presidential election.
She also requested that the judge set a final plea date of June 21, 2024, making it the last date on which prosecutors would make negotiated plea deals. The defendants would only be able to take non-negotiated deals after that date in which the state would recommend the maximum sentence, according to the filing.
"The State clearly retains the logistical and prosecutorial capabilities to try all of the remaining Defendants together," wrote Willis, asking the judge not to sever the case again until that final plea date.
How did Donald Trump plead to the election interference charges in Georgia?
Back in August, Donald Trump, along with 18 other defendants had pleaded not guilty to all charges in a sweeping racketeering indictment for alleged efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election in Georgia.
However, defendants Kenneth Chesebro, Sidney Powell, Jena Ellis, and Scott Hall subsequently took plea deals in exchange for agreeing to testify against the others. In her filing, Willis suggested that there could be other guilty pleas.
Donald Trump supporters bash Fani Willis over her request for an August start date in Georgia election interference trial
After the news of Fani Willis' request related to Donald Trump's Georgia election interference trial surfaced, the former president's supporters were quick to criticize the District Attorney.
One wrote, "Oddly convenient time frame there.. 😐," while another commented, "And that’s not election interference?"
"The time frame, tell me you are trying to make an end run around democracy without telling me that you are making an end run around democracy," commented a supporter.
Someone else noted, "How convenient, right after the GOP convention. Boy, Democrats sure catch a lot of breaks!"
