73-year-old woman ambushed by 'monster' pit bull has arm ripped off before workers who heard her screams chase dog away
An elderly woman who was brutally attacked by an American pit bull and had her arm nearly ripped out has recalled the horrific incident and expressed thanks to the heroic workers who saved her life.
Mary Rollinson, 73, of Leeds, was walking along the Engine Fields in Yeadon on August 27 when a massive American pit bull jumped out from the bushes and ambushed her, grabbing her by her right arm, according to the Mirror.
The force of the bite saw the back of her arm ripped from shoulder to elbow, and as she desperately tried to fight it off, it caught her middle finger and bit off the top.
She luckily survived after her terrified screams were heard by a group of five workmen on a nearby industrial site who intervened and managed to chase the beastly dog away.
She spent the next six weeks at the Leeds General Infirmary recovering and underwent multiple skin grafts to treat her injuries, some of which doctors said would never heal.
Furthermore, she has been left so traumatized by the attack that she has no recollection of what happened to her.
She said she vaguely remembered seeing the dog from the corner of the eye before the attack, but that everything beyond that point was a blank. "I can't thank the men who saved me enough for what they did, they were very brave," she said.
Her partner, Trevor Cornwell, on the other hand, will never forget that fateful day when he almost lost her. "It dragged her off the path and into a pond and I'm sure that if those guys hadn't heard her screams it would have killed her, it was completely berserk," he said.
"The injuries it caused are horrific, not like anything I have ever seen from a dog attack," he continued. "One of the men who saved her caught it on video as he held it at bay with a stick and it was massive, just solid muscle and very, very aggressive. She never stood a chance."
He added that it was a "miracle" she was still alive and that, being dog owners themselves, it was beyond him how anyone would willingly keep "an absolute monster" like that pit bull. "It took five men to beat the thing off her, all five of them, and if they hadn't, it would have been an even more terrible outcome."
A 22-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of having a dangerous dog but later released without charge. However, he is still under investigation and the dog is being held in a police compound until the conclusion of any potential legal proceedings.
