Contains spoilers for 'Echo'
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: ‘Echo’, Marvel’s latest mini-series follows the story of Maya Lopez, a deaf and amputee superhuman. All five episodes of the series were dropped on January 9 on Hulu and Disney+.
‘Echo’, featuring Alaqua Cox in the lead, is a heartwarming story of childhood trauma, isolation, and redemption.
What is the plot of 'Echo'?
Maya Lopez (Alaqua Cox), who grew up under the influence of her uncle Wilson Fisk/Kingpin (Vincent D'Onofrio) finds out that he was the one responsible for her father’s death. She takes the revenge by shooting him in the face.
Maya then leaves New York and goes back to Tamaha, Oklahoma, while planning to take over the empire. During her stay, she learns about her Native American Choctaw roots. Danger follows her to Tamaha as Kingpin isn’t dead and has put out a bounty on her.
With the help of mysterious visions and her grandmother’s wisdom, Maya is introduced to the Choctaw superpowers.
'Echo' ending explained
The last episode of ‘Echo’ begins with Maya Lopez visiting Fisk to kill him. She confronts him and mentions that he intentionally kept her isolated and made her choose the path of violence. However, he manipulates her by saying that he is the only one who cares about her.
On seeing Maya’s hatred towards him, he reveals that he was the one who killed his own father at the age of 12. The physical abuse of his mother made him kill his father with a hammer. He offers the same hammer to Maya, who eventually decides not to kill him.
The next day, Fisk learns that Maya has escaped from Tamaha. He then kidnaps Bonnie, Maya's cousin (Devery Jacobs), and Chula, Maya's grandmother (Tantoo Cardinal). As Maya learns about the kidnapping through Biscuits (Cody Lightning), she drives back to her hometown.
She gets a vision of her late mother telling her that she isn’t alone. She lets Maya understand that all the past generations echo through her and that her ancestors will help her out.
In a gorgeous new outfit prepared by Chula, Maya arrives at the Choctaw Nation Powwow. As she comes face-off with Fisk, she channels the power within her to deal with him.
Rather than causing harm, she chooses to be an emotional healer. They confront a traumatic memory, his mother's abuse, and she advises letting go of the past by giving away the hammer.
What happens to Kingpin in the end?
As Maya heals his traumatic memories, Fisk looks confused. He escapes the Powwow and gets on a plane back to New York. In the end, he is seen asking his assistant to schedule a meeting with the “remaining heads” before the situation goes out of control.
Meanwhile, on TV, he looks at a report revolving around the New York City Mayoral race. It seems that Fisk has found a new opportunity for the future. Will he run for mayor of New York?
Well, that’s an answer we’ll have to find out in ‘Daredevil: Born Again’.
Is it a happy ending for Maya Lopez?
Maya emerges not just as a fighter but also as a healer. Her ancestors have bestowed her with a beautiful gift of healing the wounds of past trauma.
Maya, who struggled with family issues, finally reunites with them. In the final scene, before the post-credits, she is seen joining her family for a picnic in the backyard. Maya seems to have finally left the crime world to live a happy life in her hometown.
Will there be second season of 'Echo'?
Maya has got her happy ending and we assume that 'Echo' might not be renewed for another season. It was released as a mini-series with no intention of having follow-up seasons.
MCU has also not announced 'Echo' Season 2 as yet. Meanwhile, Kingpin’s story would continue through ‘Daredevil’.
