Drogon's reaction to this death in 'Game of Thrones' finale reveals crucial information about the Iron Throne

The ashes of King's Landing saw another body lying in its midst but this death was utterly heartbreaking.

Spoilers for Game of Thrones Season 8, Episode 6

You may or may not have liked the way Daenerys Targaryen's story arc ended in 'Game of Thrones' but you can't deny that the way Drogon dealt with his mother's death, left you moved to the core. Dany's entire life was full of men who betrayed her, who thought they knew better and those closest to her stabbed her in the back. Love killed the queen of fire and as she lay dead on the ashes of King's Landing, a city she had burnt to the ground, her only son walks in and tries to wake his dead mother up.

By the end of the Great Battle of Winterfell, we already knew what had happened to two of the three original dragons. Viserion (the ice dragon the Night King was riding) shattered into a million pieces after Arya Stark killed the Night King and Rhaegal, the one Jon Snow was riding after a pretty epic dragon-on-dragon fight succumbed to his injuries after episode 4.

The only one who stayed with her throughout her journey, never betraying her, never asking anything in return was Drogon. The dragon proved in every way that their relationship was so much more than just that of a beast and a human. They loved each other and he was devastated by her death.

Drogon's reaction to his mother's death has Twitter in tears (HBO)

Dany died with the lips of her love on her, who in turn stabbed her as he kissed her, tricking her into thinking that he had finally accepted her love. Blood drips from her nose and her mouth and she slowly falls to the ground, her green eyes shocked at the treachery. Drogon, sensing that there was something wrong with his mother, steps in and nudges her with his nose. She doesn't wake up - she just lies there cold and unmoving. Angry, frustrated and heartbroken, Drogon spits fire into the air and melts the throne, probably knowing that it is what got her killed in the first place. He continues to burn it till there's barely anything left letting Jon know that if she doesn't sit on it, no one ever could.

As one can imagine, the tears on Twitter were real. "Drogon didn’t kill Jon because he didn’t blame him for killing Daenerys, he blamed the iron throne. Drogon knew that the iron throne killed his mother, Drogon finished his mother’s wishes and broke the wheel! this scene was heartbreaking," one fan wrote.

"Drogon received best character development in this finale—exercising judgement when experiencing blinding anger and grief, destroying the symbol of power and the very source of evil, and choosing to mourn in solitude, now brotherless and motherless," another one said. A third fan wrote., "this is one of the most heartbreaking scenes game of thrones has EVER delivered. it really shows the mother-son bond that Daenerys and drogon have and it made me sob so hard."

In the end, he carried his dead mother in his claw and flies off from the Red Keep. We can only hope he finds the closure he so truly deserves.
