Drexel medical student, 23, falls to his death while jumping between rooftops after an evening of drinking
A 23-year-old medical student reportedly fell to his death while trying to jump between two building rooftops in North Philadelphia in the early hours of Saturday morning.
Vivek Subramani, a third-year Drexel College of Medicine student, was jumping between rooftops when he missed and fell two stories down -- fatally hitting his head on the concrete, according to a report by Fox 29. As witnesses tried giving Subramani CPR while waiting for paramedics to arrive, the medical student lay in a pool of his own blood, KYW-TV reported.
Speaking to investigators, witnesses revealed he was part of a group that had been drinking at an event earlier in the evening. However, authorities said they didn't believe narcotics or foul play were involved in the tragic death. “It was right outside my window and I just can’t stop thinking about it,” one neighbor told Fox 29. She said she had heard the group partying before, but noted it sounded different on Friday night.
“It was really panicky and it started getting louder and louder,” she recalled.
Subramani was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead shortly after arrival. "On behalf of the entire Drexel community, I want to extend my deepest sympathy to the family, friends, and colleagues of Vivek. There are no words to express the sense of loss when any young life is cut so short, and especially for someone with so much promise," Drexel President John Fry said in a statement.
The Sigma Beta Rho fraternity, of which Subramani was a member, described him as a "bright, young and caring man who was so close to achieving his dreams of becoming a doctor."
"He would always brighten up any room he walked into and was more than a friend to those who knew him," the fraternity wrote on a GoFundMe page set up to raise money for his grieving family.
That said, the incident remains under investigation.
