Toei Animation has announced that the 20th Dragon Ball anime movie, 'Dragon Ball Super: Broly', will be releasing in Japanese theatres on December 14. Dr. Toriyama Akira, creator of the franchise, will be working on the screenplay and character design. The movie will focus on Broly, the Legendary Super Saiyan, who has appeared in some of the movies, but was not mentioned in the original manga or the original anime series.

Gamespot quotes Toriyama who writes, "Naturally you’ll get to see fierce combat, but also, the paths of destiny that lead to an encounter between Goku, Vegeta, and Broly...It also involves the Frieza Force and the history of the Saiyans, which end up having a major connection to everything. The story content turns out to be very large-scale and dramatic."

Although fans have debated whether Broly can be considered a part of the Dragon Ball universe as he has not appeared in any of the original works, Toriyama assured fans that Broly will show a different side of himself in the upcoming movie. "While keeping in mind Broly’s classic image so as not to disappoint his fans, I updated him and added a new side to his character, and I think this has resulted in a more fascinating Broly." Probably Toriyama's sense of characterisation will help fans look at Broly as a more canonical character.

The Super Saiyan form of Broly in the 'Dragon Ball Z' franchise is considered to have evolved differently as compared to the graded forms and levels 2 and 3. It is the final form of the ordinary Super Saiyan which is a powered up version of the Saiyan, and is believed to be the "true form" of the Saiyans. The Legendary Super Saiyan is a being of immense power as told in the ancient Saiyan folklore. Due to his character's preference and urge to slaughter and destroy, Broly's form is considered to be the Legendary Super Saiyan, and his appearance is much in sync with the original form of a Super Saiyan, although his power is ten times stronger.

Broly's appearance in the second part of 'Dragon Ball Super' which is the newest 'Dragon Ball' anime series that began in 2015. The early episodes cover the events of Battle of the Gods and Resurrection, and the 2018 'Dragon Ball Super' movie has been teased since the series' finale in March. Newsweek quotes Toriyama saying, "The Dragon Ball Super movie this time will be the next story in the series currently airing on TV. It will be an episode after catching our breath from the climax of the Tournament of Power with the universe’s existence on the line; with content that will give a little better understanding about Frieza and the Saiyans, which I hadn’t properly depicted up till now; and leading to a mighty foe saved for the occasion, which I think has it shaping up to be a really enjoyable story."

Reportedly, Toei Animation will be releasing three remastered classic 'Dragon Ball' movies which will hit the theatres this fall, in one of which Broly will be introduced in a way to make fans more familiar with the character's background. The original Broly film which is not a part of the original 'Dragon Ball' continuity, will introduce other Saiyan survivors who arrive on Earth.
