DC doctor run over and killed by own Mercedes while chasing robbers who stole his car
A 33-year-old doctor at MedStar Washington was killed by carjackers on March 8, 2022. According to officials, after his car was stolen, the doctor chased the culprits but was unfortunately hit by his own car and died while being taken to the intensive care unit.
Dr. Rakesh Patel of Silver Spring, Maryland went to deliver a package to his girlfriend on March 8. While the couple was embracing, carjackers stole his car that was left on running. According to police, a suspect got into the unoccupied car in the 1800 block of Vernon Street, Northwest, and attempted to drive away. While following the stolen car, Rakesh was hit by his own Mercedes and was pronounced dead at around 8 pm while he was being rushed to the hospital.
Rakesh's girlfriend described the moment as a "nightmare" and added that her boyfriend’s death has traumatized her. Rakesh's family too were devastated after the terrible tragedy. “[He died] for what? A car?” Charulatta Patel, his mother, told NBC Washington, “I always used to call him my baby.” The sad demise has shocked the Washington public and the colleagues of Dr. Rakesh.

Rakesh was an intensive care unit doctor at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. After news of his death hit, MedStar conveyed their condolences on their Facebook page. They wrote, “He will be greatly missed by those whose lives he touched. Please keep Dr. Patel’s family and peers in your thoughts and prayers during the days ahead,”
The police have released a video of the incident that was shot by a surveillance camera. The footage helped the cops nail the culprits as they retrieved the car on March 9, 2022, before 2 pm. On Twitter, many people have conveyed their condolences regarding the tragic incident. One user wrote, “Heartbreaking that a humane young man who was an asset to the people in whose midst he lived and worked had his life snuffed out so casually by the absolute rock-bottom scum of society,” while another stated, “Such a tragedy. It's horrifying that we are descending into anarchy.” We pray for the close ones of Rakesh to heal and his soul to rest in peace.
