'Down The Rabbit Hole' Ending Explained: Ultimate cliffhanger as Yolcaut gets caught in deadly attack

MEXICO CITY, MEXICO: 'Down The Rabbit Hole' aka 'Fiesta en la Madriguera' made its debut on Netflix, on May 1, 2024. The film, based on Juan Pablo Villalobos' novel of the same name revolves around Yolcaut (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo), a drug lord in Mexico, who is also a dedicated single father to his young son, Tochtli (Miguel Valverde Uribe).
Midway through the film, we discover that imminent danger awaits Yolcaut as the new government has been taking stringent actions to control the widespread crimes and violence in Mexico.
Yolcaut, along with his son and a henchman, take an impromptu trip to Africa when tensions escalate. However, he remains unwary that trouble will knock on his door upon his return.
What happens at Yolcaut's mansion in 'Down The Rabbit Hole'?
Yolcaut hosts an intimate dinner on New Year. However, the celebrations come to an arbrupt halt when his mansion is raided by the National Army.
The raid was orchestrated by the Governor to wipe out the drug cartel and Yolcaut is suddenly caught up in action. During this moment, Yolcaut's primary mission is the safety of his son.
Who saves Tochtli in Netflix's 'Down The Rabbit Hole'?
Yolcaut locates Tochtli amid the shootout and he asks him to go with his lover, Atotl. Despite the initial resistance from Tochtli, Yolcaut guides them to the secret underground pathway that would take them somewhere safe.
Atotl takes Tochtli with her and the tunnel leads them to a man who then takes them to a safe house.
Is Yolcaut alive in 'Down The Rabbit Hole'?
After escorting his son, Yolcaut stays behind to help his men fight the army. The scene suggests that he already knows that his tragic end awaits him. This is why, he not only sends his son with Atotl but also takes a moment and stares at the wall that contains his son's collection of hats, before heading out to confront the authorities.
In the final moments of the film, we see Tochtli assuming a new identity and life after the raid. He is now being referred to as Timmy and on his birthday, he gets typical gifts like video games and football.
However, despite starting a new life, he isn't truly disconnected from his original identity. On his birthday, Paula sends him a cute fur hat. Also, he receives a stone-carved artifact of two hippos whom his father had shot dead in front of him.
The film's climax doesn't showcase Yolcaut's final fate, but with Tochtli's new life, we can assume that he either died or was taken away by the authorities. Irrespective of what happened, he, being a doting father, fulfilled his promise and gifted him the hippos (not the real ones though).
