Donald Trump's Scottish golf resort reports loss of over $1 million for 8th consecutive year

One of Donald Trump's golf resorts in Scotland has posted a loss of more than $1 million for the eighth year in a row. The substandard performance has been revealed in accounts filed to Companies House. The reports show that The Trump International Golf Links in Aberdeenshire had made a loss of around $1.5 million (£1,103,248) for 2019, The Sun reports. 

Trump had opened the resort in 2012 after a fight with environmental campaigners. According to his son, Eric Trump, "The severity of the impact (of coronavirus) on the golf, leisure and hospitality industry is unprecedented and was not foreseen at the beginning of the pandemic. The directors believe the resort's profitability will be positively impacted in the long-term as a result of operational adjustments enacted to address these risks." 

The company also added that "Trump International continues to rise in the world golf rankings and plays an important part in the global Trump portfolio." 

According to the Independent, Eric, who is the director of Trump International Golf Club Scotland, had made a statement where he acknowledged that the resort had to close for 16 weeks between March and July due to coronavirus restrictions. He had also said, "The extent of the impact of Covid-19 on the company’s business and financial results will depend on the duration and spread of the outbreak and the related impact on consumer confidence and spending, all of which are highly uncertain in the current environment."

However, the directors had made claims that the membership demand and green fee rates had been increasing and that "would ensure that the resort improves its profits in the long term.

Trump International Golf Club Scotland has not posted a profit since it was opened in 2012 and said "significant progress" had been made on a plan to build a 550 unit residential village the resort. According to auditor Johnston Carmichael LLP, the resort is "is dependent on continuing finance being made available to enable it to continue operating and to meet its liabilities as they fall due." Trump's other golf resort at Turnberry, Ayrshire had made a loss of $1.4 million (£10.7 million) for 2018. 

Many social media users commented on the reports of the loss. One such user said, "You mean how many more people will have died by then, a tragedy. I know you can't stand being a "loser" but you seem to have no interest in being president except for taking a helicopter to your golf resort. I know its tough to be taken down by a virus. All about you man." Another added, "How many millions have the tax payers paid Donald Trump to travel to his own resorts.. you know the ones where he charges the secret service 5K for golf cart rentals... all that money goes DIRECTLY into trump pockets..."
