Trump says he'd be more 'politically correct' if elected for 2nd term, Internet says 'classic abuser behavior'

President Donald Trump, known amongst his followers for being one of the least politically correct politicians around, claims that that could change if he is elected for a second term. In an interview with Jason Whitlock for Outkick, the president suggested that a second term might give the world a "different personality from President Trump" - a "kinder, gentler" one. This assertion brought about much derision from social media users, many of whom called out Trump's promise to change as a common tactic used by abusive men.

During the interview, which took place before his final debate with Democratic challenger Joe Biden, Trump was asked if he would be a "kinder, gentler" president in his second term. Trump said, "When I first came here, there was so much to do. I didn't have time to be totally politically correct." He went on to say that he wanted to bring it all together, but then the coronavirus hit. "Being politically correct takes time," he said, "and sometimes we don't have time. But the answer is yes, and I'd certainly like to."

Speaking to 'Face the Nation' in 2016, Trump had this to say about political correctness: "Here's the problem with political correctness, it takes too long. We don't have the time. I can be the most politically correct person you ever interviewed, it takes too much time. People don't want political correctness, they're tired of it today. I think that's one of the things that has resonated with me. I don't go out of my way to be politically incorrect."

Twitter users have reacted to the president's statement with skepticism and disbelief, calling Trump out on his nationally abusive behavior. "Like an abusive alcoholic says when his wife walks out the door. "I will change, i promise." The words of a narcissist when people won't tolerate their behavior. Its a ruse," wrote one user online. "Trump is VERY scared and desperate. He’s going to lose big and there’s nothing he can do about it. Now he’s making this ridiculous promise that he’ll change his unacceptable behavior if we give him another chance. This is CLASSIC abuser behavior. We all know he can’t change," wrote another.

Other users have pointed out that political correctness isn't the issue so much as Trump's lack of compassion. "I would settle for being a decent human being. He has had 4 years to show us that he could do that. He has failed. His handling of the pandemic is evidence of that. He will never change," wrote one user. "Actually, sir, being “politically correct” takes only a moment to learn. Ask one of your strategists how. Learning how to be kind, to be compassionate, and to listen to the pain of others without denigrating them? THAT takes time," said a tweet.

Other accounts discount the story entirely, calling Trump a liar, and claiming that there is no way for him to change even if his language does end up being more politically correct. "If you still think the only thing wrong with Donald Trump is that he’s not a politician/politically correct, please educate yourself on the difference between being “politically correct” and being an awful person," wrote one user. "You can put lipstick on a pig, it's STILL a pig. He won't change. Who he is now is who he has ALWAYS BEEN! All you have to do is read what his niece and his sister say about him. He's a bully, a liar, a racist. Always has been, always will be" claimed another.
