Trump blames 'Blue States' for rising coronavirus deaths, Internet finds it 'appalling, inhuman and incorrect'

While the novel coronavirus continues to grip the nation, President Donald Trump has gone ahead and blamed “blues states” for the rising deaths from the deadly virus. He suggested that if "you take the Blue states out" of the equation, the US would be competing with other nations.

During a briefing at the White House, Trump said that the US has been handling the virus situation well in comparison to other nations, “despite the fact that the Blue states had tremendous death rates”. He further added, "If you take the Blue states out, we're at a level that I don't think anybody in the world would be at. We're really at a very low level but some of the states, they were Blue states and blue-state management."

Not only was his statement dubbed illogical, but the Democratic National Committee also responded to his claims through a tweet to remind the president that most of the states with Republican governors were hit hard by the pandemic. The tweet read, "Trump continues to politicize the coronavirus. COVID isn't a red state or blue state issue. 9 of the 10 states with the most infections per capita have Republican governors. This virus has impacted all Americans."

Although the Blue states such as New York, California and New Jersey were among the highly infected regions with the highest number of deaths, reports suggest that red states and battlegrounds such as Louisiana, Mississippi, Arizona and Michigan were also among the top 10 to have witnessed the most damage from the pandemic.

In the same press conference, Trump reportedly even spoke about Democratic-run states not opening up their economy and took a dig at them for not ending the coronavirus-induced restrictions sooner. According to USA Today, the president said, "By the way, we'd recommend they open up their states. It's hurting people far more than the disease itself."

It seems like Trump’s accusation of the Blue states didn’t sit well with people who surfaced on Twitter to slam him for blaming certain regions for his ineffectiveness. One tweeted, "It’s not only appalling and inhuman, it’s also incorrect. Subtract the blue states and the per capital death rate in the remaining red states is still incredibly high! Many many times more than SKorea for example." Another added, "Disgusting how a president can divide the country! So for him a life in a blue states means nothing! The same counts for him; if he wasn’t president or if he did his job as a president the Covid cases might have been way less!!"

Some of them noted that Trump is "dividing" the states ahead of the November elections. One tweeted, "There are Republicans in 'Blue' states and Democrats in 'Red' states... AMERICANS live in all states, and AMERICANS are dead and dying. Period. Trump is dividing along the electoral college lines, and that’s reprehensible. Truly sick. And why people are dying." Another added, "Trump is a segregationist president - he cannot be the US president if he doesn't care about blue states - some of which were the original states."
