Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders called off his presidential campaign on April 8. The socialist leader, who started off the primary on an impressive note in February, lost the plot in March when former vice president Joe Biden handsomely won each Super Tuesday. Sanders was trailing Biden by over 300 delegates when he suspended his campaign saying that a win was virtually impossible.

President Donald Trump reacted to the veteran dropping out and even asked Sanders' supporters to vote for him in the November election, saying he and the senator saw eye-to-eye on matters of trade. Sanders though has always been critical of Trump who he calls the worst president the US has ever had.

Sanders' pulling out hasn't impressed Trump. He is now set to take on Biden, the man he had taken on a few months earlier in an ugly battle over Ukraine dealings that saw the president himself undergoing an impeached trial. When the moderate wing of the Democratic Party united behind Biden early in March to give him a push against Sanders, who was leading at that moment, Trump was critical of the plan

On April 8, Trump made a veiled attack at the Democratic Party asking why former president Barack Obama hasn't bothered to endorse Biden, who was his No. 2 in the White House between 2009 and 2017.

At the briefing, Trump was asked by a reporter about his thoughts on Sanders' promising campaign coming to an end. Trump said the 78-year-old senator didn't drop out.

"He didn't really drop out. What about his delegates? He said that he's going to keep his delegates," Trump said, adding: "That's a weird deal going on there."

"And I don't know why President Obama hasn't supported Joe Biden a long time ago. There's something he feels is wrong," the president said. Trump said Obama hasn't yet endorsed Biden in the primary phase because he knows something that nobody else does. In the past, Obama had clarified that he wouldn't back a Democrat in the primary and even expressed his reservations over Biden’s public relations skills

Obama doesn't want to see me for 4 more years: Trump

The president felt Obama would back Biden at some point because he doesn't want to see Trump for four more years. "We think a little bit differently," Trump said.

"You know what, I'll tell you, it does amaze me that President Obama hasn't supported Sleepy Joe, it just hasn't happened, when is it going to happen? He knows something that you don't know. That I think I know, but you don't know," he said.

"And I hope that a lot of Bernie Sanders people (vote) just like they did last time, we got a tremendous percentage of Bernie people and I think they voted for me largely because of trade," he added.

Sanders addressed his supporters through a live stream a little before noon on April 8 to say that he was suspending his presidential run. "I wish I could give you better news, but I think you know the truth. But the path toward victory is virtually impossible," he said. He reiterated that his campaign was still winning the ideological battle. Sanders also said that he would keep his name on the ballot in states that are yet to vote in the Democratic primary. Several states have postponed their primaries because of the COVID-19 pandemic that has hit over 430,000 people in the country and killed over 14,700.
