Former FBI Director James Comey appeared before the US Congress on September 30 to testify on FBI’s Russia investigation. He spoke up against Attorney General William Barr's attacks regarding the investigation. He argued that the Justice Department's efforts to dismiss charges against President Donald Trump's first national security adviser Michael Flynn were “deeply concerning”, as reported by CNN.

According to the report, when he was asked to answer Barr’s comments that the investigation was “abhorrent”, Comey said, “I have no idea what on Earth he is talking about.” He said, as reported by CNN, “This was an investigation, it was appropriately predicated and opened that had to be opened and it was in the main conducted in the right way, picked up by the special counsel, lead to the indictment of dozens of people, and a finding by your colleagues in the Senate that the head of Trump's campaign was a grave counterintelligence threat to the United States of America because he was funneling in information to a known Russian intelligence officer. The notion that the attorney general believes that was an illegitimate endeavor to investigate that mystifies me.”

Since the beginning of the investigation in 2016, while Comey was FBI director, Barr has been a critic of the investigation and he has asked US Attorney John Durham to conduct an investigation into the FBI's probe. The Justice Department under Barr wanted to dismiss the Flynn charges brought by former special counsel Robert Mueller, but the judge is still weighing whether to grant the request, as per the report.

Comey mentioned a judge's criticism of the Justice Department's handling of the Flynn case, saying “this guy is getting treated in a way that nobody's ever been treated before.” Comey accepted the problems with the FISA warrants that they got on former Trump campaign adviser Carter Page but stated that it was a "small slice" of a much larger investigation into Russian election interference. “I would say, in the main, it was done by the book. It was appropriate, and it was essential that it be done. There are parts of it that are concerning ... but overall I'm proud of the work.”

Trump took to Twitter to hit back at Comey. He wrote: “So when will something significant happen to James Comey? Got caught cold. He is either very dumb, or one of the worst liars in political history. TOO LONG. EMBARRASSING!” In a separate tweet, POTUS quote-tweeted a user’s tweet and wrote: “Comey is a disaster who cheated and lied. How do you write books when you can’t remember anything? Should be tried for treason. This is ridiculous!” The user, author Paul Sperry, had written: “All this memory loss and out-of-the-loop i dunnos is strange for a guy who took copious notes after playing a case agent spying on Trump and locked them in his home safe, and wrote a book and is writing a second book now.”

And, just as always Twitter had a lot to say to Trump’s tweets. One user said, “When will something significant happen to the Trump family?” Another questioned, “When will you do something about the threat of white supremacists and stop enabling & encouraging them?” One commented, “If he’s one of the worst, you are the worst!” Another said, “When are you going get off Twitter and lead the country? Asking for 328 million friends.” A user said, "That’s the pot calling the kettle black, slime ball!."

A user claimed, “Comey is a hero who refused to compromise with your corruption.” Another said, “Donald Trump is a disaster who cheated and lied. How are you president when you don’t know anything? Should be tried for treason. This is ridiculous!” One said, “It’s a deflection from his tax fraud.  Anytime something comes up that is negative against him, and it happens frequently, he find something to divert away from him.  It’s so transparent it’s almost insulting.” A user said, “Takes treason to know treason.”
