Democratic Rep. Cedric Richmond caught watching golf on his laptop during Trump's impeachment hearings

The Louisiana Congressman was taped watching the President's Cup and has come under criticism on social media
PUBLISHED DEC 13, 2019

Cedric Richmond, the Democratic representative for Louisiana's second congressional district since 2011, was caught on camera getting quite distracted by something on his laptop during Thursday's marathon impeachment hearing into President Donald Trump's alleged offenses.

During a procedural roll call that aired on CNN, the 46-year-old Congressman seemed to be fully immersed in a golf tournament, the President's Cup golf tournament to be exact, that was streaming in front of him.

The infraction did not go unnoticed, with many calling into question Richmond's commitment when he seemingly could not seem bothered during such an important hearing.

"What on earth is Democrat Rep. Cedric Richmond watching on his laptop during this impeachment markup?" wrote GOP rapid response director Steve Guest alongside a video of the incident. "To me, it looks like Rep. Richmond is watching the President’s Cup golf tournament."

"Richmond’s actions are a DISGRACE," he added, ending with a hashtag #StopTheMadness.

In a second tweet, Guest posted a zoomed-in video of Richmond that left no doubt that he was watching a golf tournament. "Zoomed in," he wrote. "Yep. Democrat Rep. Cedric Richmond is watching golf."

Social media users weren't too pleased with Richmond. "Democrats on Nadler's Committee are so 'solemn' and 'prayerful' about impeachment that they're watching golf at the hearing," wrote GOP Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel. "This partisan sham has been an absolute waste of the American people's time."

"Comedy Hour with The Democrats," another wrote.

Others were more understanding, however. "If I had to listen to Republicans lie for 14 hours, I’d probably put some Netflix on," one tweeted, while a second posted, "I think after 15 hours everything that had needed to be said and heard had already occurred 20 times over. So reactionary and judgmental."

One of the comments on the tweet was from Conservative pro golfer Bob Estes, though he said it wasn't worth criticizing Richmond since it was the President's Cup. "Even though he’s a Democrat, I’m gonna give Rep. Richmond a pass on this one," he wrote.

The US House Judiciary Committee has postponed a vote on the two impeachment charges against Trump, abuse of power and obstruction of Congress to later on Friday, the BBC reported.

While the House is expected to vote in favor, and in the process make Trump only the third US president to be impeached, the Senate is expected to acquit him.
