JOLIET, ILLINOIS: A decorated soldier who recently split from his wife reportedly shot his baby son before turning the gun on himself, according to the police.

The 35-year-old father, Christopher Miller, allegedly murdered his 18-month-old son at his ex-wife's home in Joliet, Illinois, in the afternoon of Saturday, September 21, stated a Fox 6 report.

Officers apparently heard gunshots as they responded to reports of a domestic disturbance at the scene. The bodies of the father and his son were found by a SWAT team shortly after.

Officers found Miller's ex-wife outside after responding to the residence. They also found a nine-year-old girl with her, believed to be her daughter from an earlier relationship. Both had sustained fresh injuries.

Miller was allegedly told to stay away from his ex-wife's house. However, he illegally entered the residence on Saturday and became violent, according to the police.

The mother told authorities that her estranged husband was inside with their son when the tragedy unfolded, according to the report. Officers then tried to get in touch with Miller at the time, but failed to make contact with him.

The door of the house the two were in had to be broken down after a SWAT team was called to the scene and further attempts to open a line of communication failed.

When officers entered the property, they found the bodies of Miller and his son lying lifeless on the floor. Meanwhile, the mother and her nine-year-old daughter were treated for their injuries after they were rushed to the nearby St. Joseph's Hospital.

Speaking to Metro US, neighbor Val Radeka paid tribute to the murdered child. "He was an adorable blond rambunctious little guy. I haven't slept much since," he said.

"His big wheel (toy) was sitting in the driveway yesterday and I cried when I saw it…When I was at their house the little guy was literally tearing around."

The apparent murder-suicide has reportedly left several neighbors stunned and devastated at the same time. Well-wishers have since made a makeshift memorial outside the house and paid tribute to the deceased baby.
