Van Halen frontman David Lee Roth nearly ended a newlywed couple's marriage by changing his phone number
David Lee Roth, the celebrated Van Halen frontman, has had his fair share of hijinks, drama and hysterical women chasing after him due to his many decades in the spotlight.
However, a recent article in the Washington Post by author Nancy French has revealed how a series of unfortunate coincidences and misunderstandings regarding the singer nearly cost her and her husband their marriage.
According to French's article, back in the day, she had just gotten married at the tender age of 20 to a young attorney she had recently met named David French and decided to move to New York City with him.
This was despite her friends, family and church members all voicing their concerns that it was perhaps too soon to be diving into a new relationship, and that she didn't really know that much about her new beau, David.
However, Nancy insisted that love would find a way to overcome these obstacles, and settled into an idyllic, "romantic as a love song" life with her new husband in New York. All that changed when mysterious calls started coming in.
Even though things had initially seemed well with the happy couple, within a week of moving to New York, a steady stream of women started calling on the phone at all hours of the day, asking to speak to David.
The first few times this happened, Nancy's husband David had been rather dismissive, putting the calls down to the wrong number. However, the flirtatious calls kept coming and all of the breathy-voiced women on the phone were asking for David by name.
Nancy started to suspect that perhaps her attorney husband was leading a double life and started having second thoughts about jumping into a relationship with this "rank stranger" as her mother had once labeled her fiancé. Her mind was in turmoil until a phone call from an unexpected source helped set her mind at ease.
Thankfully, the whole fiasco got cleared up the day that David Lee Roth's agent called. In a hilarious coincidence, it turned out that the number her husband David was currently using was actually the old phone number of the Van Halen frontman.
Apparently he still gave women and fans his old number in an effort to let them down easy. While that might have worked out for him, he probably wasn't counting on another David getting his old phone number.
The misunderstanding was thankfully resolved just in time, and as for Nancy and David, they also began to see the funny side of things. They even started getting exclusive invites to parties and once even fielded a phone call from David Lee Roth's father!
