Jared Leto saying David Fincher did his cornrows in 'Panic Room' leaves fans in awe but here's the truth

A Twitter user shared a clip from an old interview with Leto where the actor said Fincher “actually braided my hair,” adding, “A lot of people know this about David, but he spent a big part of his youth on the islands”

Do you remember the 2002 David Fincher film ‘Panic Room’? The thriller centers around a mother-daughter duo, played by Jodie Foster and Kristen Stewart, whose new home is invaded by burglars, played by Forest Whitaker, Jared Leto, and Dwight Yoakam. The film did reasonably well in the box office and was critically acclaimed for its ideas and themes, and of course, the acting. But ‘Panic Room’ became a topic of conversation on Twitter on Wednesday, August 5, for a strange reason.

A Twitter user shared a clip from an old interview with Leto -- though we haven’t been able to ascertain when and where the interview is from -- where the ‘Suicide Squad’ actor can be seen talking about Fincher. The user shared the video with the caption, “Jared Leto revealed that David Fincher did his cornrows in a behind the scenes interview of Panic Room.”

In the interview, Leto says (although, not seriously) that Fincher “actually braided my hair,” adding, “A lot of people know this about David, but he spent a big part of his youth on the islands.”

The same Twitter user also wrote, sharing photos of Leto’s character Junior, donning tight cornrows, “I’ll never get over the fact that David Fincher did Jared Leto’s cornrows in Panic Room.”

Unsurprisingly, this led to several people feeling perplexed and taken aback. Many also commented that they were jealous of Fincher’s cornrow skills. A Twitter user wrote, “I’m crying his braids are actually too clean man @David Fincher if [you are] reading this please book me in for some twists next Thursday.” Another wrote, “David Fincher: filmmaker and noted natural hair influencer.” While another stated, “Not David Fincher better at cornrows than me.”

But did David Fincher of ‘Fight Club’, ‘Seven’, ‘Zodiac’, and ‘Gone Girl’ fame really style Leto’s hair in the film? It would appear not. Speaking to Interview magazine in 2013, Leto actually did mention who did his hair.

He said about the hairdo: “They were really painful initially -- I couldn’t sleep the first night, it was so excruciating. And it was all one hundred percent human hair. My hair. But the woman who did [the braiding], named Candy -- who has a salon in L.A. called Candy for Hair, appropriately -- got it down. What would take some people four to six hours to do, she was doing in an hour. And I actually enjoyed it once I got used to it.”

Of course, not everyone fell for the story. A Twitter user wrote, “I know David Fincher is somewhere cackling right now. He loves mess.” Another wrote, “I am CRYING that I was fooled into believing David Fincher could do hair like this.

One Twitter user noted, "Where else but on Twitter could you have a bunch of folks taking Ls for believing that David Fincher did Jared Leto's cornrows in Panic Room after spending his childhood in the islands learning how to braid hair?" While another observed, "Even if for a brief moment, living in the reality in which David Fincher could do cornrows was quite the thrill."
