Aaliyah's ex Damon Dash says R Kelly married her when she was just 15 and she was 'happy to be away' from him
Aaliyah's former boyfriend Damon Dash has yet again made a few shocking revelations about Aaliyah and R Kelly in an interview conducted before the premiere of Lifetime’s bombshell documentary ‘Surviving R Kelly Part ll: The Reckoning’.
In a short clip obtained by TMZ, Dash spoke at length about Aaliyah’s life after her split from Kelly and how she wanted to keep herself away from her alleged former husband.
Dash states, "Aaliyah was like the sacrificial lamb for all that, bro, because she didn't deserve none of that. Good soul, good girl, and wasn't even really so resentful — like, 'Let that man live but keep him the fuck away from me'. That's all she wanted, she was just happy to be away."
Aaliyah’s and Kelly’s secret marriage became the talk of the town in 1994, when media released their marriage certificate, which listed Aaliyah’s age as 18.
Although the couple never publicly addressed their marriage and the whole relationship was hush-hush, the latest documentary features Kelly’s former personal assistant Demetrius Smith, who claims that he was present at Aaliyah and Kelly’s wedding.
He has even revealed that Kelly managed to obtain false documents for Aaliyah, who apparently was only 15 at the time.
Meanwhile, Dash has stated that he was well aware of everything that went down between Aaliyah and Kelly. He says, “I know it was the cover-up and all of that, but how does that cover it up? It just made the conversation less crazy, like, ‘Oh, he married a child'.”
Aaliyah died in a plane crash at the age of 22. While not much about her feelings for Kelly has been disclosed or talked about, Dash says, “It just was so much hurt for her to revisit it."
‘Surviving R Kelly Part ll: The Reckoning' is a follow up to Lifetime’s documentary about Kelly.
The American singer and song producer is currently facing charges for multiple cases of sexual assault, child pornography and sex-trafficking.
