Becoming a Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader is no easy feat. 'Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders: Meet the Team' lets you in on all the behind-the-scenes drama that goes on during the audition process. As the show returns on CMT for season 13 there's a fresh crop of dancers and cheerleaders who know exactly what they are doing. Fan favorite mentor and showmanship coach Melissa Rycroft is back this season. In a sneak peek, she says, "It is the best of the best, but I don’t think everybody read the job description. I am looking for a girl who is just genuinely having fun, and if they’re nervous, I have no clue about it." Apart from Melissa, special guests this season include choreographers Nick Florez and Emmy-winner Travis Wall.
Last year, when Melissa came back for season 12, she had said that she is really proud of her mentees. "I always like coming back because when I get to work with the girls during training camp, it’s always fun to come back the next year and see how much they’ve grown. I’ve always got those few that we kind of develop a bit of a bond, ones that I’m definitely fighting for, and that I see really want it. When I see them have a great year and are going into their second, it makes me feel really proud and happy for them to have helped in any way in their journey and helped them accomplish this dream."
According to the official website, the first episode of the new season kicks off with preliminary auditions for the 2018-2019 squad. Dancers from all over the country gather at the AT&T stadium in the hopes to bag a spot in the coveted team. The girls have varied backgrounds and some are even former NBA, NFL, NHL, and college dancers. They will represent 32 states from across the country.
The preliminary round starts with five girls coming to the stage, introducing themselves with their dance background and some fun facts, then a freestyle dance to a randomly selected song for 90 seconds. The judges will be looking at technique, their creativity and whether they are teachable while scoring them. Several girls are coming back to auditions after previously being cut in training camp. Will this year finally be their year?
Make no mistake, these girls are not dumb. While the list varies from blonde, brunette to Asian, the girls' backgrounds are just as diverse. Take, for example, Amy Trader. She's a petite blonde with a passion for dance. Amy is a former New York Knicks dancer. She's a graduate from the University of Missouri-Colombia where she studied biomedical engineering and computational neuroscience. She was on the Dean’s List at the time. In 2016, she received her MBA from Columbia College. She likes to volunteer for the University of Missouri Veterinary Small Animal Clinic when she's not flipping on the field or winning hearts.
