Cyndi Lauper and Billy Porter definitely left fans entertained with their off-sync performance

With social distancing rules still in place, most New Year Eve plans involve just chilling in front of the TV and catching up on all the NYE special programming. While that might not sound particularly exciting, turns out, celebrities sure know how to keep it interesting — and every time they do something odd, you know Twitter will come swooping in to entertain us all.

This time around, it was Cyndi Lauper and Billy Porter singing a rendition of 'True Colours', on ABC's 'Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve With Ryan Seacrest 2021'. And let's just say their performance was...something. The pair seemed to be completely off sync right off the bat. “I’m on camera! I’m on camera!,” Cyndi said into the camera before starting her solo number.

In no time, the memes started flowing on Twitter as viewers couldn't help but talk about the 'final punishment of 2020'. Catch their performance here:

"When Cyndi Lauper and Billy Porter started singing 'True Colors', I immediately opened Twitter because I knew the memes were coming. I was not disappointed #RockinEve," wrote one Twitter user. However, that's the least of their issues, seeing that Twitter caught on quick about the fact that Billy was clearly not having any of it.

And you can best believe there was some shade thrown in the mix. "Billy Porter wondering why he agreed to sing with Cyndi Lauper," tweeted another user, and the screen recording here really is priceless. "Cyndi Lauper’s performance was the final punishment for 2020," a third wrote.

Turns out, Billy wasn't putting on a great show either, however, fans seemed far more preoccupied with his over the top shoulder pads. "Regina George: stop trying to make shoulder pads happen. Billy Porter: #RockinEve #NewYearsEve" a user hilariously tweeted.

"Happy New Year to Billy Porter’s turbocharged shoulder pads." tweeted another. But seriously, it definitely sounded like both the award-winning artists decided to skip all their rehearsals. As one Twitter user put it, "Cyndi Lauper and Billy Porter just sounded like two 8-year-olds putting on a 'show' for adults with the intention of asking for a sleepover after."

Talk about accurate, seeing that their performance looked and sounded like they decided to perform while hanging out in the rafters. Cyndi's solo performance after was no better. Her EDM-infused performance had Twitter thoroughly confused, as users tried really hard to figure out what exactly she was up to.

"This Cyndi Lauper performance... somebody come get your grandma" tweeted one user, with a clip that gives you a little insight into the said performance but leaves you with so many questions. Twitter obviously came in strong with memes.

"#NewYearsRockinEve #CyndiLauper Me: “Mom, I want to listen to P!nk” Mom: “We have P!nk at home” P!nk at home:" tweeted a viewer. Some users reminded us of Mariah's little mishap last year. "The only person enjoying that Cyndi Lauper performance was Mariah Carey. #RockinEve" tweeted one user.

"Cyndi Lauper and Mariah Carey from last year doing a duet," said another, with this hilarious clip attached.

Seeing how this year has gone by, maybe we do owe Cyndi and Billy a thank you instead, at least we're laughing our way into 2021.

Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve With Ryan Seacrest 2021 premiered on ABC, Wednesday, December 31 starting at 8 pm ET and continued to the Times Square ball drop with performances from around the globe until 2 am ET.
