Ohio man buys doughnut for $1,000 to help struggling bakery stay afloat, leaves owner in tears
In a very heart-warming incident, a man from Ohio had to buy a single doughnut for a whopping $1,000 from a family-owned bakery. His kind gesture touched the business owners of Tremont Goodie Shop so much they shared the news on their Facebook page.
The bakery shop is in Upper Arlington, Ohio where the kind customer has been a regular for "40 or 50 years”. Sharing the news on social media, the business wrote: “We are in tears. This is a custard donut for $1,000 to help keep us in business. What a blessing.”
It also posted the picture of the generous customer’s hand holding a white bag with a heart on it.
Emilie Smith, the manager of Tremont Goodie Shop, said she was left speechless after the humane incident. “He called and asked us if he would be able to give us $1,000 for his doughnut. I got choked up. He asked again 'would that be ok?' because there was silence on the line,” Smith told Fox News. “I choke out, 'yes, of course, it would be ok!' I never expected that,” she added.
However, Smith asserted that the customer, whose identity has not been revealed, is not new with his generosity. In the manger’s words, he has done "little random acts of kindness in the past" as well. He had once brought pizzas for the bakery employees.
Smith also said the customer was staying away from the shop because he was "trying to lose weight. However, when the business of the bakery shop was hit amid the coronavirus pandemic, causing the shop to bring in less than 1/3 of its usual income, the customer returned to help. “He said 'I really needed to support you. He's the kind of guy that just lights up the room when he's here,” Smith said.
The customer’s kind gesture has also helped to raise its business as Smith said there has been an uptick in online sales and orders from locals. “This morning we could barely keep up with phone calls! And someone left a $100 tip for the employees. It's truly been such a blessing,” she remarked.
Just like the bakery owner and its employees, the kind act of the helping person has also touched many people on Facebook. One of the internet user wrote, “That is absolutely amazing! I am so grateful for folks who can do something like that. Can't think of a better business to support!”
Another wrote, “Love this! We will be making our weekly order again this week. Just ate our last soft chocolate cookie.” “Yes!!!! I love this and Tremont Goodie Shop!” a third person exclaimed.
A person named, Barb Dane, said, “Wow! Hope you keep getting support. I no longer live in the area, but have very fond memories from my childhood (50+ yrs ago) and later introducing later generations to cinnamon sticks and thumbprint cookies!!!!”
The bakery shop also commented on one of the user’s query when the person asked how are they taking orders saying, “We are currently taking orders by phone. At that time you can prepay for your order and when you arrive to give us another call and we bring it out to a pickup table out front. That way your goodie transaction is completely contactless for everyone’s safety!”
Tremont Goodie Shop has been in the business for over 60 years responded.
