Oliver Queen's death was prophesized by the Monitor (LaMonica Garrett) in the final episode of season 7. His death was supposed to be a necessary sacrifice so that billions could be saved during the 'Crisis'. However, it does seem like the cosmic entity got the death sequence wrong. The heroes battle hordes of Shadow Demons in Part 1 and with the number increasing exponentially, the Monitor orders the heroes to fall back. All of the heroes are being pulled away from one by one, except Oliver who chooses to stay and fight till the last of the people on the planet is evacuated.
And while it is a heroic decision to stay and fight, Oliver quickly realizes he is outmatched and yet charges on. The next few minutes see all the heroes back in a safe place on Earth-1 and the Monitor arrives with a dying Oliver. "He fought bravely till his last breath," the Monitor remarks and the Green Arrow bid a heartfelt goodbye to Mia (Kate McNamara).  The episode also establishes the Monitor got the death wrong as he says this wasn't the way he saw Oliver die.

The conversation goes:  "This is my destiny," Oliver rasped. "Barry? You, my friend, are the very best of us. I gave it all up for you and Kara... I need the two of you to be the ones to save us now." With that, he turns to Mia, his daughter. "Mia, don't forget to find your mother, find William, and tell them how much I loved them," he said. "I love you, Mia. You keep me in your heart, okay?" She nodded, and then he closed his eyes and passed away. "It was not supposed to be like this," the Monitor confessed to the shell-shocked heroes. "This is not his ending I foresaw."
Well, with this, it does seem everything is pretty much unpredictable. Does this also mean the Monitor may actually revive Oliver?

'Crisis on Infinite Earths, Part 2' airs 8 pm Tuesday, December 9 on The CW.
