'Crisis on Infinite Earths': The Kate-Kara dynamic is one of the highlights in the storyline of the multiverse-shattering battle

The relationship between the two serves as the perfect replacement for Oliver and Barry's friendship.

'Crisis on Infinite Earths' wasn't exactly an all-action affair. Or not the first three episodes, at least. And we're glad it isn't.  It's safe to say a major component in each of these episodes was the relationship that was established between characters. Should we narrow this down, then the focus is on the bond Kara Danvers (Melissa Benoist) and Kate Kane (Ruby Rose) share through in the three episodes. This relationship isn't about two superheroes teaming up and taking down an evil cosmic entity. It was about understanding each other and charting a course of action that would be best suited to save the multiverse.

It may not have gone as the two expected. In the end, just everyone except the Paragons were obliterated and now what awaits is a no-holds-barred face-off between the Paragons and the Anti-Monitor (LaMonica Garrett). Just ahead of the battle, we witness a moment where Kate manages to convince Kara to not shape the course of history by tampering with the Book of Destiny. One of the storylines involves Kara tempted to revive Earth-38 by rewriting the Book of Destiny, except Kate begs to differ.  And, if it means stopping Kara, she's ready to use the Kryptonite she pulled from Bruce Wayne's (Kevin Conroy) exoskeleton.

However, the pair manage to work out their differences rather than go all "Dawn of Justice' with each other. The critcial scene that also highlighted the evolution of these characters was when Kara tells Kate to keep the Kryptonite as a symbol of trust in Kate's judgment. This is also a way of the girl of steel accepting, she could be corrupted and this may very well serve as a contingency plan. The scene is a throwback to a classic comic storyline where Superman hands over a chunk of Kryptonite to Batman as he is the most important one to trust should he go dark and lose control.

Perhaps, this exploration of the Kate-Kara dynamic could just be the start. Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) and Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) have been allies and friends in the Arrowverse and with that dynamic already looked at, it looks like the Kate-Kara relationship is the next factor to be explored in future installments. According to Comicbook, showrunner Marc Guggenheim teased that Kara and Kate's relationship will start to play an even bigger role, similar to the one that Oliver Queen/Green Arrow (Stephen Amell) and Barry Allen/The Flash (Grant Gustin) had.

"I think in the years to come, we will see that the relationship between Kate and Kara is the replacement for the relationship between Barry and Oliver," Guggenheim said. "While we honor the Barry and Oliver relationship, what’s been really, really nice is developing the relationship between Kara and Kate. We really just teased it at the end of the ‘Elseworlds’ last year with the World’s Finest reference, but we really get a chance to dig deeper into that and have those two characters supporting each other much in the same way that Barry and Oliver have been supporting each other in previous crossovers."

What are your thoughts on the Kate-Kara dynamic?

'Crisis on Infinite Earths' will return to The CW on January 14, 2020.
