'Crash Landing on You' finale sees Jeong-hyeok and Se-ri say goodbye but a border can’t keep them apart
The final episode of the tvN and Netflix show 'Crash Landing on You' broke the record earlier set by the 2017 show 'Goblin' on the network for the highest rating. The finale week dramatically pulls Ri Jeong-hyeok (Hyun Bin) and Yoon Se-ri (Son Ye-jin) apart in the beginning. We see Jeong-hyeok shoot Cheol-gang and even as he nears his death, Cheol-gang manipulates Jeong-hyeok into believing that there is no way out for him and even if he did manage to get out of Seoul into North Korea, he will only end up becoming interrogated and his act will also lead to his parents' death. Jeong-hyeok, who is not aware of the steps that his father has taken to help him ends up giving up on making his way out of being captured by the South Korean authorities.
Se-ri's sister in law has ruined the lives of everyone who has tried to help Se-ri and in the process, she has outed everyone for their origins. When Se-ri sees everyone get captured, she is frantic and tries to help them, but instead ends up getting sicker from her bullet wound. Jeong-hyeok's team of five men have no idea what is going to happen to them. They expect the worst, meaning death, and yet they end up worrying more about Se-ri because she came running to save all of them.
Once all of them are captured, they are taken to an unknown destination where all of them will be interrogated. While the team are expecting to be tortured, they are fed and one of them is even shown a satellite image of his native village. Jeong-hyeok, on the other hand, seems to have decided that he will take responsibility for everything so as to save his comrades and his parents. The National Intelligence Service (NIS) tries to dig up dirt on his behavior in Seoul, but they end up with nothing. As expected, Jeong-hyeok takes all the blame, but Se-ri gives her own statement which differs completely from his. The NIS agents do not understand why a North Korean agent would want to save a South Korean citizen. The others refuse to give any statement, and this frustrates the agents who are interrogating the case of a North Korean spy entering South Korea.
To avoid further conflict, they bring Jeong-hyeok and Se-ri face to face to avoid differing statements. Jeong-hyeok continues to stand by his statement and this stresses Se-ri further. This leads to Se-ri getting blood poison and is in a dire situation. Despite all of this, Jeong-hyeok stays silent. He only tells the truth once the agents find Cheol-gang's laptop which reveals that Jeong-hyeok's parents are safe and if he returns home on time, he might save everyone involved. Just when he is ready to confess, he learns that Se-ri's condition has worsened.
When the NIS decides that Jeong-hyeok had no ill intention towards South Korea, they decide to send him and his comrades back to North Korea in exchange for South Korean individuals who have been imprisoned for spying as well. When Se-ri gets better and wakes up after a week, she learns that he is going to return and decides not to see him because she had already said her goodbyes to him many times. Jeong-hyeok and his team finally return home just the way they came but before they are exchanged, Se-ri ends up interrupting as she sees Jeong-hyeok get handcuffed. Despite it, Jeong-hyeok leaves her behind to go home after trying to pacify her by telling her that she is not at fault for anything that happened in the past or what awaits him in the future.
Of course, in the end, Jeong-hyeok and Se-ri find out that distance or a border cannot keep them from loving each other.
