Sick couple who kissed and laughed after murdering man they called 'dad' with broken bottle get life
KENT, UK: A couple has been sentenced to life after they killed a 66-year-old pensioner identified as Paul Wakefield. The accused duo has been identified as Kayleigh Halliday, 36, and Shane Myles, 32. The couple laughed and kissed after murdering the old man they reportedly called “dad.” Paul Wakefield was beaten and stabbed to death with a broken bottle of Vodka in his flat in Folkestone, Kent.
According to The Daily Mail, the body of Mr Wakefield was found around 9 pm in his one-bedroomed home in Spencer House, Coolinge Lane. ‘It was his kind heart that killed Paul’
Kayleigh Halliday, who is a mother to six children, will have to serve a minimum term of 21 years and three months before she can apply for parole. Whereas, Shane Myles will have to serve 22 years, less than 232 days spent on remand if he wants to apply for parole, as revealed by The Daily Mail. According to the publication, Halliday even used the heel of a pair of boots bought by her generous pensioner to stamp on his head.
Shane Wakefield, one of Paul Wakefield’s siblings told the court, “Paul was cruelly taken from us in the most savage way at the hands of those he cared for” adding, “He was kind to his killers in ways that people would be amazed at, giving them chance after chance which ultimately backfired.” He continued, “His watchwords were 'kindness' and 'forgiveness' and this cost him his life. He was a well-known figure in Folkestone and had time for anyone. His kindness to strangers was amazing.”
Shane Wakefield further shared “It was his kind heart that killed Paul. He will remain a beacon to me for attempting to help those in need, but also a lesson in caution” concluding, “Not all of those who are helped are grateful and, as in this case, some bite the hand of kindness.”
‘He regarded the two of you as being like a son and a daughter’
While sentencing the duo at Maidstone Crown Court, Kent on Friday, Judge Philip Statman stated, “He regarded the two of you as being like a son and a daughter, and both of you repaid him in this terrible manner.”
He added, “You murdered him in his own home where he should have felt safe and secure. This was a brutal attack where no mercy was shown to him by either of you.” The two accused even stole the pensioner’s phone, wallet, and bank card. They reportedly planned to run away to Blackpool before getting arrested a few hours later.
