WASHINGTON, DC: Secret Service agents protecting President Joe Biden’s granddaughter Naomi Biden opened fire after three suspects tried to break into an unmarked Secret Service vehicle in Georgetown, Washington, DC, on Sunday night, November 12.

The incident sparked a heated debate on the internet with some users criticizing the agents’ use of force and others defending their actions.

How did suspects break into Naomi Biden's car?

The agents, assigned to protect Naomi Biden, 29, and the daughter of Hunter Biden, were out with her in the Georgetown neighborhood.

They shot three suspects when they broke the window of the parked and unoccupied SUV, the Secret Service said in a statement, as reported by Daily Mail.

Around 11.58 pm, one of the agents opened fire, but no one was struck by the gunfire.

The three people were seen fleeing in a red car and the Secret Service said it put out a regional bulletin to Metropolitan Police to be on the lookout for it.

"During this encounter, a federal agent discharged a service weapon and it is believed no one was struck," the Secret Service said.

"The offenders immediately fled the scene in a red vehicle and a regional lookout was issued to supporting units," the added.

"There was no threat to any protectees" and the DC Metropolitan Police Department and the Secret Service are investigating the incident, it said.

Naomi Biden gets Secret Service protection as a member of the first family

Naomi Biden is the oldest grandchild of President Biden and a lawyer in Washington DC. She gets Secret Service protection as a member of the first family.

She is the daughter of Hunter Biden and his first wife Kathleen Buhle.

Naomi married Peter Neal who also works as a lawyer in DC. They had stayed at the White House after their wedding there, but now have their own home in the city.

It is unclear if Naomi Biden heard the shooting but she was made aware of the incident afterward, as reported by ABC citing sources.

Internet users react to the shooting

Some internet users reacted on X in response to a post that mentioned the incident occurred near Naomi's house.

One user wrote, ‘“Opened fire” but nobody was shot or apprehended. Sounds like an effective security detail…"’

A second user wrote, “Another example of the good guys with guns saving the day. Every house in America should have armed security!”

One more wrote, “Glad she is ok, just goes to show that everyone needs to keep aware.”

Some users question the double standards of Secret Service shooting suspects attempting to carjack Naomi Biden

One user questioned, “How can you support the policies that create this kind of lawlessness and still think this is not going to be the result?”

Another user reflected, “And if I did that for someone who was breaking into my car I’d be in jail right this second. Guaranteed.”

One more user commented, “And yet in most coastal states you go to jail for shooting someone trying to break into your car. Rules for thee but not for me. Ed, thoughts on that?”

Some users doubted the motive of the suspects

One more user said, “What a wild time. This is getting crazy.” Another user wrote, “I am betting they had no idea who’s car they were breaking into. This is common in the DC area.”

One more user wrote, “Yes definitely. I’m glad she’s all right. The political environment is still pretty bad, maybe they need to beef up security a little more.”

Another wrote, “Is it normal to open fire on suspected car thieves? Seems extreme.” One more asked, "This is a good outcome I wonder what the motive was?."
