When will 'Coming 2 America' drop on Amazon Prime? Here's what's new about Eddie Murphy's 'Coming to America' sequel
Even though 'Coming 2 America', the sequel to John Landis’s 1988 original comedy film 'Coming to America', was originally slated to release on December 18, 2020, it was announced last month that the movie has been acquired by Amazon Studios from Paramount Pictures. According to reports, the film will now be available to stream on Amazon Prime only next year on March 5, 2021.
The sequel will see actor Eddie Murphy reprising his role as Prince Akeem who's now on track to becoming the King of Zamunda when he finds out about a son he didn't know about back in America named Lavelle (Jermaine Fowler). Akeem's father's dying wish is to groom his grandson as the crown prince of the kingdom so the prince and his best friend Semmi (Arsenio Hall) will go back to America to find his son, a Queen's native. Along with Murphy and Hall, James Earl Jones (as Jaffe Joffer), Shari Headley (as Queen Lisa), John Amos (as Cleo McDowell) and Louie Anderson (as Maurice) will also reprise their roles. Wesley Snipes, Leslie Jones, Tracy Morgan, Jermaine Fowler, Bella Murphy, Rotimi, KiKi Layne, Nomzamo Mbatha, and Teyana Taylor will also be joining the cast of the sequel.
The prequel and original film 'Coming to America', was a "cultural phenomenon that is one of the most loved and celebrated comedies of all time,” as said by the head of Amazon Studios, Jennifer Salke. “Thanks to Eddie Murphy’s comedic genius along with the brilliant filmmakers, writers, and fabulous cast, we couldn’t be more excited to celebrate this new adventure. We know audiences around the world will fall in love with this hilarious, joyful movie that will surely become a timeless favorite," she added. The producer of the film, Kevin Misher also shared his excitement saying, “What could be better than a return to Zamunda? We are so excited for Amazon Studios to bring Eddie Murphy and ‘Coming 2 America’ to a worldwide audience where they can laugh again with characters they have loved for 30 years, and meet new ones that they will love for years to come."
'Coming to America' grossed $288 million worldwide and saw Crown Prince Akeem of Zamunda go to Queen's New York with Semmi as he went undercover to find himself a wife that he can respect. We can only imagine how big the sequel 'Coming 2 America' could be considering there are many fans of the original film and of actor Murphy. The sequel 'Coming 2 America' is directed by Craig Brewer and produced by Paramount Pictures in association with New Republic Pictures, and Eddie Murphy Productions, and Misher Films. Kenya Barris, Barry W Blaustein, and David Sheffield serve as screenplay writers and the story is by Barry W Blaustein, David Sheffield, and Justin Kanew, based on characters created by Murphy. Misher and Murphy serve as producers, and Brian Oliver, Bradley Fischer, Valerii An, Kenya Barris, Charisse Hewitt-Webster, Michele Imperato Stabile, and Andy Berman serve as executive producers.
