Comic-Con 2020: Will 'The Boys' Season 2 continue to see The Deep as the butt of all jokes?

The Deep has not benefited from the nuanced balance of parody and questions of corruption that the rest of the show's superheroes have had

New trailer footage from 'The Boys' has been released, featuring The Deep (Chace Crawford) in one of the few battles on his home turf: the open sea. The clip shows the boys taking The Deep out, armed with nothing more than a very fast boat, leading us to ask the question: Will The Deep continue to be nothing but a joke character in Season 2 of 'The Boys'?

The Deep is a parody of Aquaman, the Justice League character who has gotten the most derision from fans over the years. Though Aquaman, through years of life adapted to the deep sea pressure of Atlantis, contains speed and strength enough to rival Wonder Woman, the one thing that all fans harp on is Aquaman's ability to communicate with all marine life, or, as it's more commonly put, "the ability to talk to fish". While the Aquaman of DC Comics guides marine life to attack in ways he deems fit, 'The Boys' takes this one step further as The Deep seems to have a more personal connection with the marine life he talks to — at one point, attempting to help a dolphin escape that he had a love affair with.

The Deep has, for the most part, been nothing but a joke character on 'The Boys', going through a bizarre journey. His first major scene appeared to be a more serious take on workplace sexual harassment, but he was soon kicked off the team for a number of background gags that had nothing to do with the main plot. Even his own sexual assault at the hands of an overzealous fan later in the season was played more for laughs than it was anything else. It was hard to know just how seriously to take The Deep, and the clip revealed for Season 2 of 'The Boys' doesn't make things any clearer.

At first it seems like the superhero of the seas is finally getting his time to shine as he summons a number of sharks and whales to terrify the boys as they attempt to escape on a boat. He even gets to pose heroically as he blocks their one escape route with a majestic whale. However, despite having powers of their own, the boys make short work of this whale. Mother's Milk (Laz Alonso) rams the boat straight into the whale's side, leaving a bloody mess that topples The Deep flat onto his back, which is where the clip ends. Even without the aid of sea life, The Deep should have no problem taking the Boys out single-handedly, but the clip ends there.

'The Boys' is an irreverent take on superhero culture, meaning all superheroes are parodied in some way or another, but for the most part, the comedy is well balanced in the series with more serious questions of corruption. The Deep, for his part, does not benefit from this balance, and his purpose on the series remains as murky as the waters his poor departed whale has now bloodied. You can watch the clip below.

'The Boys' Season 2 is set to release on Amazon Prime on September 4, 2020.
