Chrissy Teigen apologizes for 's***ty and pointless' Megan Thee Stallion twerking joke after getting slammed
Chrissy Teigen managed to antagonize Megan Thee Stallion's fans on Friday with an ill-conceived joke. The 34-year-old model and cookbook author participated in the “I have a joke on… but” Twitter trend. When television writer Nell Scovell posted, “I have a Charles Manson joke and it kills,” Teigen quote tweeted it and said, “I have a Megan Thee Stallion joke but it needs to be twerked on.”
While she has since deleted the tweet -- she clarified on Friday, “Before you start, I love her. I'll delete because you guys are sooooo f***ing annoying. Just unfollow me you absolute tools” -- she received a lot of flak all the same. Subsequently, Tiegen locked her Twitter account, making her tweets invisible to those who don't follow her. She has 13.2M followers on the website.
As many online felt Teigen's tweets about Megan were insensitive, on Saturday, July 25, Teigen issued a long apology. “I used the play on words joke with a celeb and something they're known for with Meg and twerking and I should have known that it is just not the right time especially for something so dumb and s***ty and pointless as the joke was," she wrote.
“Making anyone feel reminded of a terrible time or letting you guys down sucks more than anything to me so I am sorry to Megan and anyone who thought this was about the incident at all,” she added. “You'll say someone else wrote this or that I don't mean it and that's always the punishment for having said it in the first place so I'll take it.”
But before she apologized, Megan Thee Stallion’s fans chastised Teigen. “Since @chrissyteigen ‘loves’ Megan so much she could’ve hopped on her 13 million follower platform to say, Megan is recovering from a gunshot trauma, please send her love and healing vibes. But instead, she decided to make Megan the butt of a corny a** joke. And that speaks volumes,” wrote a Twitter user.
“I didn’t even see Chrissy Teigen tweet that but she should’ve kept that in the drafts. Megan just got shot last week baby. Read the room,” wrote another. The ‘Savage’ rapper has been recovering from gunshot wounds from a recent incident that also involved Tory Lanez's arrest.
Another Twitter user pointed out, “That joke format could literally have worked with Lizzo, Cardi, Nicky, yet you chose Megan at a time when she's literally being harassed and taunted with insensitive jokes.”
“I don’t understand why these female celebrities are talking about Megan Thee Stallion. You girls didn’t have anything to say before, but now you do? Was it because you couldn’t find any flaws in the way she carries herself and leaves the cattiness alone? Chrissy Teigen stfu,” wrote a Twitter user.
While the ‘Hot Girl Summer’ artist has not commented on Teigen’s tweets, she tweeted about people making jokes on her in the wake of her injury earlier. She wrote on Twitter on July 23, “Dumb b**** that shit ain’t f**king funny who TF jokes about getting shot by a [expletive]?” And then added, “And f*** all the h** a** [expletive] making jokes about it too. I’ll talk about s*** when I get ready.”
On July 17, she wrote on Twitter about the insensitivity around the incident. She said, “Black women are so unprotected and we hold so many things in to protect the feelings of others [without] considering our own. It might be funny to y’all on the internet and just another messy topic for you to talk about but this is my real life and I’m real-life hurt and traumatized.”
