SIMI VALLEY, CALIFORNIA: The second GOP debate has begun at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California.

The former New Jersey governor Chris Christie was the first GOP candidate to mention former President Donald Trump.

Christie had an answer on who is to blame if the government shuts down, and his response was straightforward, which included people in Washington DC, Joe Biden, and also, Donald Trump.

Christie also received a round of applause for mentioning Trump, which was acknowledged by users on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Chris Christie becomes the first candidate to mention Donald Trump

“If the government shuts down, should voters blame populist Republicans?” is the question Chris Christie was asked at the second GOP debate.

According to NBC News, “The US is headed toward a government shutdown this weekend unless Congress takes action soon. Government funding expires when the clock strikes 12.01 am Sunday.”

Christie responded, “Voters should blame everyone who is in Washington DC, they get sent down there to do the job and they have been failing at doing the job for a very long time and let’s be honest about this with the voters.”

He continued, “During the Trump administration, he added 7 trillion dollars in national debt, and now the Biden administration has put another 5 trillion on and counting."

"They have failed and they are in the spot they are in now because none of them are willing to tell the truth. None of them are willing to take on the difficult issues,” he added.

Christie mentioned that “we don’t get any answers” because “Joe Biden hides in his basement and won’t answer as to why he’s raising the debt the way he’s done.”

Christie then went on to call out Trump, “Donald Trump hides behind the walls of his golf clubs and won’t show up here to answer questions like all the rest of us are here to answer."

"He put 7 trillion on the debt. He should be in this room to answer those questions for the people you talk about, who are suffering,” he added.

Internet hails Chris Christie for calling out Donald Trump

Viewers of the GOP debate have reacted to Chris Christie’s mention of Donald Trump on X.

One person wrote, “Good for Chris Christie calling out Donald Trump adding $7 trillion to the economy and not being on stage to answer for his reckless spending,”

Another one said, “Christie with a legit point. Trump added a shitload of debt. #GOPDebate”

Fox News anchor Tomi Lahren also wrote, “I'm not Christie defender but he's not wrong about Trump needing to show up and answer for certain aspects of his tenure.”

The audience applause was also acknowledged as one wrote, “The audience applauded Chris Christie slamming Donald Trump for running up the national debt. #GOPDebate”

One X user wrote, “Starting off, there is no reason whatsoever that Trump should have missed the debate. Christie has already started off with that argument that Trump should have been here,”

Another user wrote, “Christie goes after Trump for ducking the debate, and there is actually applause. #GOPDebate”
