Chelsea vs Sheffield United: Werner to Mendy, five players to watch out for in the Blues vs Blades encounter
Chelsea has every reason to rejoice. While their Premier League campaign was off to a shaky start, it does appear their new acquisitions have gelled better with the team and their impressive run in the ongoing UEFA Champions League is ample proof. The Blues slammed in a 3-0 win against Rennes on Wednesday with Timo Werner's penalty brace doing the job for Chelsea. Their defense has shaped up over the last few games and while they have a blow in Kai Havertz out due to Covid-19, they still have enough depth in the squad for Frank Lampard to choose from.
The Blues face a woefully struggling Sheffield United bunch on Saturday, November 8, and ahead of the scrimmage, here's a look at the five players from the Blues to watch out for:
Timo Werner
Werner has been the name on every fan and expert discussion. The German now has three goals in the Premier League and three in the Champions League. Add two assists to the mix and he's every bit the talent Lampard lauded ahead of his roping him in. Werner will be a key component in the Blues side and will be keen to add more goals to his name when they take on the Blades.
Thiago Silva
Perhaps, the best signing Chelsea made this summer, At 36, veteran Silva is still a picture of consistency and the Brazilian notched up another fine performance against Rennes complementing his defenders. His support at the back continues to be crucial. Getting past him is a hurdle for most oppositions and that augurs well for Chelsea.
N'Golo Kante
Another class midfielder who had a great game against Rennes. With Jorginho taking a more deeper role, Kante was able to dominate the midfield and he was perfect with not letting the Rennes offense grab sight of the ball. The Frenchman may have been pulled out after some valuable minutes, but he did enough to make an impact in the game.
Edouard Mendy
In Mendy's games for Chelsea so far, he's stacked up six clean sheets. Goalkeeping was an area for concern for Lampard, and while Mendy had a relatively relaxed game, his focus and anticipation would be key going forward in the Premier League when they are up against attacking teams.
Tammy Abraham
With Werner being the man of the moment, Abraham was the young forward paving way for the German, but his class and improvement in skillset will probably force Lampard to give him more opportunities. He adds extra zing to the Blues attack and that's a factor the gaffer cannot ignore.
Chelsea host Sheffield at Stamford Bridge. Kick-off is scheduled at 12:30 PM ET and the game can be watched live on NBC.
