Charles Bronson, referred to in the British press as the "most violent prisoner in Britain" and "Britain's most notorious prisoner," is now a Lord after his family bought him some land in anticipation of him walking free from prison.

The 67-year-old was officially bestowed with the title of Lord Charles after his family purchased some land in Galloway, Scotland, and is said to be ecstatic that wardens and other prisoners are addressing him as "Lord Salvador".

A document obtained by the Daily Star confirmed that Bronson "may henceforth and in perpetuity be known by the style and title of Lord and shall hereafter be known as Lord Charles Arthur Salvador."

Bronson, born Michael Gordon Peterson, had changed his name to Charles Bronson, after the American actor, on the suggestion of his promoter to make him stand out during his career as a bare-knuckle boxer. He now goes by Charles Arthur Salvador after he changed his name again in 2014 to reflect that of his favorite painter, Salvador Dali, and expressed his joy at his new 'Lord' title in a letter.

"Says it all. Me a Lord. You can’t make this up!" he wrote. "It’s something to be proud of, and grateful. It’s got a nice ring to it, Lord Salvador. OK well, next achievement is my freedom. See you at the party."

Bronson was first arrested as a petty criminal but quickly escalated and was convicted and sentenced in 1974 to seven years' imprisonment for armed robbery. In the years that followed, he became known as one of the most violent prisoners in the country over his repeated attacks on guards and other prisoners.

He was briefly free in 1987 but returned to prison a year later after being convicted of planning another robbery. While the sentence was initially for a few years, his confrontations with guards and other prisoners saw it being changed to life imprisonment. He has spent close to 50 years behind bars and has been held in each of England's three prison psychiatric hospitals.

Speaking about his new title, George Bamby, who found out he was Bronson's "long lost son" in 2017, said prison officers had found the Established Titles deed hilarious and had even laminated it and put it up in his cell in HMP Woodhill, in Milton Keynes, Bucks. He said they were even calling him 'Lord' and that his father was "loving it."

"It just started out as a joke. Dad was looking at land to buy for when he gets out," he shared. "I saw an advert saying he could buy a tiny patch of land in west Scotland and get a title. He absolutely loved the idea of it and the fact that people would have to call him Lord."

"When he told the screws, they didn’t believe him, so when the document came through they put it up in his cell for him," he continued. "Some of them call him that now for a laugh — and he is loving it."
