Carer swindles elderly dementia patient out of $23,000 to pay off boyfriend's drug debts
The 35-year-old carer, Sarah Wingate, befriended her patient while looking for opportunities to make money, and admitted to two offenses of fraud in court
A carer has been jailed for 18 months after she fleeced a vulnerable dementia patient out of $23,000 in a bid to pay off her boyfriend's drug debts. The 35-year-old carer, Sarah Wingate, befriended her patient while looking for opportunities to make money, and admitted to two offenses of fraud, Daily Mail reported.
During Wingate's scheme, which ran from November 6, 2017, upto April 20 last year, she hoped that the victim, who was in his 70s, would be too confused to realize that money was going missing from his account, a court heard.
Addressing the Grimsby Crown Court, Nigel Clive, prosecuting, said the victim suffered from dementia, neglected himself, and relied on the carer's help.
