'Can't take a joke, Donald?' Twitterati slams President Trump after he decides to skip White House Correspondents' Dinner again
President Donald Trump has decided to give a skip to the White House Correspondents Association Dinner again, this year. The Republican, instead, has elected press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders to represent the administration. Trump had initiated a boycott of the event in the first year of his presidency.
The White House, released a statement on Friday, stating that the president will "actively encourage" his administration members to go for the event, in celebration of the First Amendment, according to reports.
Trump, during an interview with Bernie & Sid in the Morning” on 77 WABC on Friday, said it was "unlikely" he would attend the gathering: It’s "so bad and so fake."
The president's relationship with mainstream media has always been hostile as he infamously calls the news organizations "fake news". Trump had given a miss to the annual event — typically a cozy mix of journalists and politicians — last year as well amidst his verbal tussle with the press.
His relationship with the media has not taken great leaps since then, as the president publicly announced the Fake News Awards, to point out the news organizations which "misrepresented" him or his administration. He has made The Washington Post his most recent target, along with its owner Jeff Bezos and his company, Amazon.
The Republican, however, had promised to attend this year's event, which is scheduled on April 28.
The president reportedly is not too thrilled about this year's host, Michelle Wolf, who is a contributor to "The Daily Show with Trevor Noah." Wolf is one of the staunchest critics of President Trump on late-night television.
Reports state that comedian Kathy Griffin is also set to attend the traditional dinner. She was photographed holding a fake severed head of the president in May last year. The Twitterati also slammed Trump for not being a sport and said that he is giving the event a miss because he "can not take a joke"
