'He asked me for a ride': Austin man details encounter with stranger he believes is Lady Bird Lake killer

“On Monday, May 1, 2023, approximately at 2:03 a.m. Austin Police Department (APD) officers responded to a shooting call at 2100 block of Jesse Segovia St. and located a car in the water,” cops told Fox News Digital, adding, “This is an active investigation. We do not have any more information to release at this time.” A dive team returned after sunrise. The car was pulled out by police with no one inside.

Is there a serial killer in Austin?

Speculation is rife that a serial killer, who is preying on men, is on the loose in Austin. An eighth body was pulled from a lake in the city in just 10 months.

Police dismissed claims that the deaths were the work of a serial killer, and said that although each incident occurred at the lake, "the circumstances, exact locations, and demographics surrounding these cases vary," according to the Daily Mail. Safety measures have been beefed up by the City of Austin around the trail near Rainey Street. A fence and lights have been set up and there is an increased presence of law enforcement.

Police say there are no 'allegations of foul play'

The Austin Police Department, however, dismissed claims that a serial killer was behind the deaths. "The Austin Police Department is aware of speculations regarding the recent drownings in Lady Bird Lake. Although these cases are still under investigation and evidence is being analyzed, at this time, there is no evidence in any of these cases to support allegations of foul play. While each incident has occurred at the lake, the circumstances, exact locations, and demographics surrounding these cases vary. Our investigators approach every case with an open mind and objectively examine all available evidence," the department said in a statement.

"We work closely with the Travis County Medical Examiner's Office, which conducts a parallel investigation into all deaths. The Medical Examiner performs autopsies in each of these types of death investigations. The results of these autopsies have not revealed any trauma to the bodies nor indication of foul play," it added.

"One common theme of the drownings in Austin this year is the combination of alcohol and easy access to Lady Bird Lake, which has numerous access points. Many of the access points can be challenging to see at night. The parks in which most of these drownings have occurred are park areas that close at 10:00 pm and occur after the park closes. We advise the public to follow the rules on park closures," the department concluded.

'No justice is being served!'

Social media users reacted to the news about the car, with one of them saying on Facebook, "This is getting RIDICULOUS & UNACCEPTABLE! I really do believe the FBI needs to be called in." Another said, "I bet it’s not the only car in that lake there is a group of guys who go an find them in lakes an pull them out with the help around I believe it’s called Adventures with purpose wish they could come check that lake out."

"Another car?? This is absolutely ridiculous!!! I'm lost for words.. and I really hope this nonsense ends.. because I just know none of these are suicide.. and yes maybe not all are connected. But I bet if they actually would investigate they would start to find a pattern and maybe even some individuals behind these MURDERS. I just dont even know what to say. . Prayers for everyone in Austin and family's affected by this mess! No family is getting any answers. No justice is being served!" said another user.

"This is getting absolutely ridiculous. Makes me scared to move back to Texas. But I love texas!" one user said, while another wrote, "That's why I worked in bee cave, stayed away from Rainey street and didn't go near the lake at night time... when I moved to round rock it was the #1 safest city in the world at the time.. then craziness started. I am from Atlanta so I know all about big cities and crime.. but this is same area in the same part of the city, same landmark someone getting killed every other day.. it's not coincidence. Yes in big cities crime happens all day everyday but its all over the city.. this is one specific location in the city.. and they aren't investigating.. they just rule them suicides.."
