A 22-year-old woman, a former volleyball coach at a rural Iowa school district is charged for sexual exploitation of a minor. She was accused of engaging in sexual relations and sharing explicit images with a 17-year-old student. They crossed paths when the boy hit her car with his.

Brycelyn Haughey, the coach, has received a sentence of 20 years based on four counts of sexual exploitation of a minor. It is claimed that this relation between Haughey and the 17-year-old was long-term and has been going on since 2020 when it started.

Haughey was a student at Buena Vista University and was also attending Kirkwood Community College and Mount Mercy University in Cedar Rapids. In July 2020, she was hired as a volleyball coach by the GMG Community School District. In September 2020, the 17-year-old male student bumped into her car. In order to pay for and help fix her car, the boy and Haughey exchanged numbers. An affidavit by Detective Trevor Killian of the local police says that "the student stated that Haughey asked how old [he] was and he stated 17. She further asked him if [the student] was a senior and [he] said 'no, I'm a junior.' [The student] stated that Brycelyn then made a comment of 'close enough'."

This affidavit also says that later the boy started receiving flirty texts from Haughey. The student said that he 'just went with it cause he thought she was joking around.'

After sharing numbers and multiple texts, the boy went to Haughey's house for the first time on September 25. They started drinking. In addition to these two, there was another girl who was even younger than the 17-year-old. As stated in the document, this was the first time that the coach and student engaged in an act of a sexual nature.

This pattern of meeting, drinking and having sex continued until December. When asked more about details, the student said that during the course of their union, he received multiple 'seductive' images from her and one of these was definitely completely naked. Despite the legal age of consent being 16 in Iowa, people in authoritative positions who engage in sexual acts with others between 16-18 years of age may still be charged with sex-related crimes.

Brycelyn Haughey has left her coaching job at Green Mountain and joined another paraprofessional education-related job which she again left in mid-December.
