Brother of 'League of Legends' star kills mother and attacks father with knife as they comfort him after his breakup with girlfriend
30-year-old Yihong Peng was arrested on March 31 in Orange County, California, and he was charged with the murder of his mother after he allegedly stabbed her to death. He stabbed the father as well which resulted in the older man being sent to the hospital with severe injuries, said a statement released by the Orange County Sheriff's Department.
Peng is the elder brother of League of Legends' Yiliang "Doublelift" Peng, the AD carry for Team Liquid, and is a legend himself in the esports community. League of Legends is a multiplayer online battle arena video game developed and published by Riot Games, USA.
The star spoke about the tragic incident in a Twitlonger post on April 1 saying: "This weekend I received some terrible news."
"My older brother attacked both of my parents with a knife. As a result of this attack, my mom passed away and my dad was seriously hurt and is now recovering in hospital."
"I'm still processing this news and joining up with my dad and little brother to make sure they're ok and the proper arrangements are being made. I'll likely be quiet on social media while I work through this."
"I hope you all understand and support me as you always have in the past."
The authorities responded to an incident that was reported at the family home in San Juan Capistrano at around 10:30 pm PST on March 30. A neighbor had reported seeing Peng walking on the street with a knife.
When Orange County Sheriff's deputies arrived at the scene after the distress call, they found 59-year-old Wei Ping Shen, Peng's mother, with a fatal stab wound.
Guojon Peng, the father, was found by the deputies with a critical injury and was immediately rushed to a local hospital. According to the OC Sheriff's Department, he is expected to make a recovery.
The statement released by the sheriff's department said: "Deputies arrived at the scene within one minute and located two victims, both with stab wounds, and observed the suspect attempting to flee the scene."
"Following a short pursuit, the suspect was taken into custody without incident. A knife was recovered at the scene."
Peng is being held on the $1million bail at the moment at the Orange County Jail where he was booked into on the murder charge after he was arrested. The 30-year-old is expected to appear in court for his hearing on April 2.
Police are actively investigating the motive behind the violent attack although it has been alleged that he went to his parent's house because he had just broken up with his girlfriend. One of his neighbors said that he was very depressed after his breakup with his girlfriend and he had gone to his parent's house to be consoled.
Peng's younger brother, known as Doublelift, is one one of the most popular players in the League of Legends community in North America. He had one of his best career moments at the Spring Split on March 31, 2018.
24-year-old "Doublelift" was named the player of the series after his Team Liquid defeated rivals Echo Fox and earned a spot in the league's final. This is also the first time in his current team's teams history that they have reached this position.
Team Liquid will appear in the North American League Championship Series Spring Split Final on April 8 in Miami.
