Controversial conservative author Brigitte Gabriel has earned the ire of Twitter for asserting that police officers do not get fair trials. Her remark came right after Derek Chauvin was pronounced guilty in the murder of George Floyd. As people across the world joined in the celebrations, Gabriel is one of the very few critics of the verdict against the former Minneapolis police officer which was announced on Tuesday, April 20, 2021.

In a tweet, Gabriel stated, "I believe Derek Chauvin is guilty of something, I do not believe it's all three charges. If police officers don't get fair trials, why become one and risk your life daily to protect people who treat you horribly?"

Why did Brigitte Gabriel call the trial unfair?

The jury ruled that Chauvin was guilty of all three charges against him, namely, second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter in the killing of George Floyd. However, Gabriel appeared to disagree with the verdict, asserting that she believes the trial was unfair. She elaborated that Chauvin might be 'guilty of something', but not all the three charges.

Gabriel also added that police officers would not have the motivation to risk their lives daily and protect people if they are 'treated horribly' by the public and do not get 'fair trials'. Her statement was immediately countered by many Twitter users who slammed her problematic stance about the verdict.

"What?!!! How did you watch the video? Because I don’t understand where this post is coming from?" a user questioned in disbelief. Another accused her of racism saying, "It’s coming from straight up racism. No one could watch that video and see Chauvin kneel on Floyd’s neck for minutes after he lost consciousness and refuse medical attention, and say he wasn’t guilty. I am so glad there is justice."

"You could not have watched the video and typed this utter pile with a straight face. Chauvin could have avoided all this if he treated Floyd like an actual human being," another user responded to Gabriel. Another explained to her, "The something you're looking for that he's guilty of is 1st degree murder/intentional.That's what he did. He had every chance to reconsider in those 9 minutes, heed the crowd and George's pleas and lift his damn knee from his neck. But no he pressed harder instead."

Gabriel had been tweeting her views about the trial the entire time, here are some of them which caused social media to slam her. In one of her tweets, she clearly mentions that she does not believe the Minneapolis ex-cop is guilty: "I do not know if Derek Chauvin is guilty, I do know this verdict will be appealed and I do know he did not receive a fair trial."

In the next, she called protesters 'rioters' and wrote: "Will all the rioters go home and leave our businesses alone now? Doubtfully." Her next tweet called the trial an 'uphill battle': While Chauvin is and should appeal the verdict, it's an uphill battle, and it is not likely. This was not a fair trial or an unbiased jury, but legally speaking, Derek Chauvin is in big trouble. It's a sad day for our court system." And later when the charges were announced. she couldn't help but reiterate her controversial viewpoint calling it 'insane'.
